Gestational Diabetes?

I did the 1 Hour Screening and was called back in with the dr saying my sugar was "a little high" Is this something I should worry about? I don't really know anything about it, and everything i've read up doesn't tell me much of anything.

Also, any suggestions for holding the glucose drink down for 3 hours? I barely made i through the 1 hour test!

Gestational diabetes is a glucose intolerance and is a little different then diabetes. I have failed the 1 hour and passed the 3 before. For the 3 hour it helps getting it down by using a straw, keeping it down I've got nothing for you unfortunately. I don't think a little high is something to be overly worried about. good luck

I had gestational diabetes with all 3 of my kids. I had to follow a strict diet and give myself insulin shots in the belly. I won't lie it was a huge pain in the butt. However the heath concerns are more for the mother than the baby. The only real side effect of the disease that can "hurt" the baby is that they have a tendency to be a little or a lot over weight when born to a mother with this condition. Which in turn can cause a difficult labor and delivery. I have no pointers on how to hold down that junk. I had to do mine twice because I threw it up within 5 seconds. You would think they could make it taste a little better, huh. You might try your local hospital for more info. My clinic & doctor didn't specialize in this so he sent me to a diabetes education clinic. Good luck.

A fair amount of people fail the first test but pass the second. They are trying to see if your sugars spike high but also that they stay high for 3 hours. If they spike then go down, you're okay.

Either way, you should probably adjust your diet because that initial spike isn't good for the baby (no matter if the doctor excuses it). In general, avoid "white" carbs - white rice, white bread, white potatoes, white sugar. No sodas or juice! Eat whole grains, brown rice, complex carbohydrates that take longer to break down in your system. Make a good portion of your diet be protein and vegetables.

Sorry, no advice on the 3-hour test. I'm a diabetic so I didn't have to take it.

I was in teh same situation with my first. I convinced myself that I had diabetes and would never be able to have ice cream again (which would be the end of the world for me). I went back for the 3 hour screen and it came back completely normal. The doctor said that it happens somewhat often, as the 1 hour really just shows if you need further testing. Since you don't fast for it he said breakfast could have screwed it up the little bit.

I am type 1 diabetic and have been since I was 10. I have to give myself shots and follow a diabetic diet. But now that I am pregnant I ahve more shots and have to watch what I eat even more. It's not fun, and I hope you don' thave it. Good luck holding the drink down. Nasty stuff.
