We found a stray kitten
We found a stray kitten. I'm not even sure how old it is but it's head isn't even as big as a tennis ball. From head to tail it's probably about as long as brick. It has an injured eye and we're not sure if we should take it to the vet (we don't plan on keeping it) or shelter.
It won't drink any water out of a tiny dish or eat any of the tuna we gave it. It's been following me around and she steps on my feet and her little claws come out, not sure what she is doing.
What should we feed her and what kind of behavior do kittens this young display? I am not familiar with cats at all.
Do you think it is safe to touch the stray kitten? I've petted it slightly but everyone keeps telling me not to touch her.
We found her last night so she made it through the night just fine. Now she's up and about moving everywhere.
Aren't cats lactose intolerant? So they really arent' supposed to drink milk.

Take her to the vet. They will be able to tell how old she is and what to do for her eye injury. You can tell them that you found her and don't want to keep her and they may keep her at the vet and find her a home or direct you to a good non-kill shelter. The best thing for this kitten is to go to a vet. She may be too young to drink and eat on her own and may need kitten formula out of a kitten bottle. Try buying that. Its at most pet stores. At least call your vet if your not going to take her there and tell them everything, they can help that's why they're there. Good luck.
EDIT:
I wouldn't put soap on its eye it can get in the eye and irritate it. If you must clean it use a clean paper towel and warm water and wipe the surface of the eye. From your description I'm not sure what kind of eye injury she has. Take her to the vet before it gets worse, please. Good luck again.

They are telling you not to touch it because it may still be with it's mother, if the kitten returns to her mother with your scent on it, mum may reject it. Use a clean towel to handel it.
From the size you describe and the fact that she doesn't have much control over her claws yet I would guess that she is quite young.
You don't say where you found it, but I would go back there and have a good look around to see if you can spot a mother cat. Take some canned tuna with you, it smells strong and will intice most cats.
If she isn't drinking or eating it could be either that she is too young and isn't weaned yet or she is injured/unwell.
You metioned an eye injury which certainly needs treaing ASAP. If she will let you clean it gently with some warm salted water and cotton wool.
Once you have made sure that mummy cat isn't around you should contact your local vet or animal shelter. If it is out of hours I would contact the emergancy vet for further advice as she is not eating or drinking. This can quickly become serious in very young kittens.
Amd no, cats are not supposed to drink cows milk, it isn't good for them. But you can buy cat milk from most supermarkets and pet shops.
Good luck

He probably is sick is his eye shut or gunky? You can rub apple-cider vinegar on his neck to help his eye get better. Also you can wash his eyes with baby shampoo and water or a cooled green or black teabag. Its too little to drink from a dish you will have to get a pet bottle or use an eye dropper. He also need kitten replacement milk. You can get it at wal-mart. Its like 3 dollars for 8 ounces of it. You can touch him all you want, nothing he has will go to you just be sure to wash your hands because he might be dirty from being outside. Also about 25 mins after eating use wet cotton balls or tissues to rub his bottom. The mama cat does this to make him use the bathroom. You can email me for more tips at kswigeart@micros-retail.com I have taken care of many kittens as little as a week old and I am glad to help.
Edit:
I have saved at least 7 kittens in the past few months. The mother cat will take it back. Just a month ago I was treating some sick kittens that were outside for a week and I would bring them in a few times a day to clean there eyes and put vinegar on them the mother would take them back every time. Believe me a little baby shampoo in a cup of water will not hurt the kitten at all. Just be sure to use a separate cotton ball for each eye so the other eye doesn't get infected. Also if you decide to try the teabag you can put that in a cup of water and just dip a cotton ball into the cup. Do not give them regular milk they cant digest it correctly.

i have a stray kitten and if its as big as you say its only about 4 weeks old and probably still feeds on the mother. if the eye is injured, take it to the vet and see if surgery will make it better DO NOT give it to the shelter because it won't get a lot exercise there and young dogs and cats need lots of playtime, not cage time. If giving the kitten milk doesnt' work, try a little piece of grass and kitten chow, NOT CAT FOOD that would be dangerous for the kitten to eat.Plus take it outside in your hand its probably scared and needs to see its outside surroundings where it came from or pretty close

wash her eye with a wet rag (warmish-cool) and keep it cleaned. Kitten when they attack feet they find them as toys, so the little kitten is only playing. Don't be scared to touch her. She may have got hurt by another animal or got caught on something. Taking an very young animal into a shelter and being taken to so many different places for her to find a home is very traumatizing for such a small kitten or even any type of animal. It is very much better to keep her, or you could ask the vet to be her foster parents until she finds a home. she may still need her mothers milk, try giving her lambs milk from a small bottle and make sure she can take in the nipple. You could go to a pet store and ask if they sell bottles or go to a store where you find very think nipples, or if you know someones pet who has just giving birth that also will help. if she is old enough to drink cows milk you could try that. also, please read info on kittens stages http://www.boutiquekittens.com/index.php?id=206 that will help you so much! please read a lot on cats. maybe you found a new family member and you didn't know it at all. Please take care of her in her best care.

Please don't be scared or afraid to touch the kitten, it's not like touching her will put your scent on her and then she will be rejected by her mother.
Cats shouldn't really drink cow's milk but they can. If you want to look after her for the time being, you may need to get some special cat's milk available at the supermarket.
As for food, try something you can mash up. if she's really young she's probably not started on solid foods yet. in which case, get her to a vet or pound quickly. Pounds and vets will take in most stray kittens, so certainly do something with her as she sounds very small and little and needs help from someone with a good heart :)

I take it their mum has abandoned them? First make sure they are healthy if you want to raise them and ensure they are not sneezing, have no eye discharge/nasal discharge - if you want take them to the vet for a check up. Raising 3 week old kittens involves a lot of work can they toilet by themselves yet? If they can't you need to stimulate this as the mum would. Take the corner of a paper towel and run it under warm water then wipe over the kittens genitals to stimulate urine and faeces production if they can do this on their own it's better. Try them with a dry animal milk replacement which you will need to make up as per instructions you should be able to buy it from a pet shop/vet and feed the required amount to them either in a small saucer/lid or if they won't drink on their own you will have to feed them yourself via a syringe which you should be able to get from a vet/shelter usually 4, 3ml syringes full 5-7x daily is ok. The kittens may even eat small amounts of kitten food so try this first as the more they can do themselves the less there is for you. You need to keep them warm too. If you prefer you can take them to the shelter but bear in mind the shelter may think they are too young so they may not keep them or may have too many to foster out. But if you ask if you can foster them and once they are big enough (around 1kg) would they be able to find them homes. Unless you want to keep them.

don't worry too much. its probably not eating because it's not feeling comfortable or has a problem that's causing it to reject food. have you tried bottle feeding it? it sounds like a kitten so its not used to feeding itself, but feeds from the mom.you should find a bottle with a small tip for it to feed from. cats first form of food is milk or cream anyway.
as for the injury on the eye, you should first check if the eye injury is spreading day by day, if so, you should take it to the vet to see if it has an infection.if not.. then you should try to gently (this ins't of all cats but most won't like it) wipe it body (or just the eye area) with a slightly damp wash cloth. to remove germs that can do further harm to the cat. then you should take it to the shelter. hope i helped out!^^

She should be safe to touch, just don't rub your eyes afterwards and be sure to wash your hands. Don't be afraid to pet her. Rub her cheek or lightly scratch by her tail. She may start purring for you. A trip to the vet or shelter right away to get her help for the eye is best. She may lose vision if not treated. She may also have trouble smelling and had been nursing. A can of kitten food would be a good thing to try to feed. I think she is just looking for comfort and contact when kneading your shoes.

Ive seen people give cats milk but its baby milk ready made in a carton and they give it the cat with a syringe straight into its mouth. Not cows milk.
If I were u I would take it to a shelter because it may have cat flu like one I rescued, if it doesnt get treated the cat could lose its eyes or even die.
Its safe to touch the cat, they havent got anything that it will pass onto you, cats arnt vermin.
