What did I break and what do I need to replace on my computer?
I just moved to Chile a few days ago from the States. I brought my desktop which is an HP Slimline. I bought a surge protector that American plugs can plug into. However, being an idiot, I did not flip the switch on the back that would change the voltage, so when I plugged in my computer, it shorted out the power for my floor. Once we hit the circuit breaker, all of the power came back on but I screwed up my computer.
Is my computer fixable? I was thinking that I just blew the power supply out and if that is the case, I can find a new one on ebay and fix it. Will a new power supply fix my computer? I was using a surge protector, so hopefully that saved my hard drive and everything else.
Please help, Thank you.

yes, your PS is fried, change it and everything should be fine.
just remember where the wires go before removing them.

You definitely killed the power supply. Its also very possible that the motherboard, and hard drives were also fried as these are also connected directly to the power supply. A new power supply is pretty inexpensive, but try to find and use a power supply from some other computer to see if the rest of the PC is still OK. Oh and if its a Dell, you might need a Dell PSU because those are sometimes proprietary.

Good luck. I have a friend who had her hands full, put her computer down and proceeded to drive over it. Feel better?
