"African-American" is probably what you wanted him to put.
Political correctness is not law required and is in fact quite ignorant.
You weren't born in Africa and then moved here, most likely with your parents. Thats the only way you can be called that, after your grandparents generation that term is nullified.
Its not against the law and I don't know what you say is true with the cop, but I don't see how you got that idea from what he said.
