Wireless Internet Connection Problem - requires modem & router reboot

Quite frequently, I lose my internet connection on my laptop. To restore connection, I need to shut off computer, reboot modem & router (sometimes multiple times). I have a desktop hooked into router, and don't have this issue and I have this same problem when using my laptop at my parents house, which is also a wireless network. I feel it is a problem with my laptop, not ISP, I have run windows repair tool and it returns with no help. It is a fairly intermitent problem, but lately seems to be worse. One way, I can for sure duplicate the problem is is if I close my laptop (shut the screen down onto the keyboard) and then when I reopen it, no internet connection. It is very frustrating, any help is much appreciated. I am running Windows XP, on HP Pavilion, connection via SBC Global DSL service and I am using AVG for virus protection.

Disconnect the Ethernet cable. Down at the bottom right of your screen there should be two overlapping boxes with a red cross. This indicates your Local Area Network (LAN) port is not connected to anything. If you cannot find the icon then your LAN port may be disabled. Once you find the icon, switch on the router and reconnect the cable. If the cross disappears or the icon disappears altogether then you are connected to the router. Now read the router instructions for what to do next. You should not connect via USB and I would be surprised if your router has a USB port for you to connect to.

Are you connecting through an Ethernet cable or wireless if wireless close down wireless try an Ethernet cable laptop to into router You may have to set it up

If it works with no dropouts etc you will know its in the wireless setup so you have a base where to start trouble shooting from check drivers etc.
