What do we need to get a small recording studio set up?

My friend and I wanted to start a little movie studio in his house. We both have Macs (I have an iMac and he has an iMac and a MacBook,) and we have some software (Final Cut Express and the trial of Final Cut and Shake), but the camera we have is a cheap Samsung DV camera, and we can't do much more than chroma-key. We want to do live keying, and I know that we need a mixer, but I have no idea which one to get. Also, we need a new camera, preferably HD, and I would like a second monitor. Also, I have been doing some 3D animating in Blender, and was wondering if we could incorporate that into our movies. So my question really is: What is the grand total of things that we need to start our small little studio, and how can we possibly make a small profit, if possible?

Thanks so much!!! :)

Update:

We are 15 so a $300,000 budget doesn't quite work for us. :)

That is a tough question. Film making can be a very expensive undertaking. Often times, just a good quality lens can cost $80,000 or more. Typically, the cameras I see on the set are in the $100,000 price range.

My facility does post production audio and dvd authoring, editing and basic motion stuff and we had to spend about $300,000 before we had enough stuff to be able to market our services and have people pay us for the services.

Right now, you and 1 million other people have your set up. The only thing that will put you above the mix is to have the same professional gear that the production houses have. Otherwise, why would anyone pay for services that they could do themselves?

Finally, if you are doing this for fun then it doesn't matter what your setup is but you want to make a profit so you are gonna have to budget for the big toys.

I would suggest putting a budget together and posting that budget along with the specifics of your editing room so people can point you in the right direction.

    Good Luck

hi, I actually have a house studio and that i'm getting extraordinarily stable sound. The budget? nicely, you do not likely decide for lots. a computer, voice recording utility (Cubase or Nuendo), a microphone a sound card, a popfilter and a preamp. you will love the AT2020 microphones. that's like a hundred$ and it brings high quality sounds. i take advantage of it for one million year and you could not see the adaptation between it and extra high priced mics. The music mixture will make the adaptation!bear in strategies that. yet once you have adequate VSTs you will do stable! stable success
