Call to all Wiccans and other Pagans?

Right now, on the Fox News Channel, they are discussing Wicca. The report was on a study that said that Buffy the Vampre Slayer had encouraged women to leave the Christian church. The anchor said something like "I don't believe a Christian would turn Wiccan like that." Then Brian said "I don't see it, or it would have happened during Bewitched". One of the anchors said "But on Bewitched, those were GOOD witches".

Question is - what do you think of that.

Reason I posted - send an e-mail to friends@foxnews.com or go to the Fox News website: they just called for Wiccans to respond and explain 'what is so good about Wicca that people would leave Christianity to study it?"

Please answer here, but let's fill the Fox News inbox with "Blessed Be" messages!

Update:

OK, there is no question mark after my question. SO, the question is, what do you think of that?

Update 2:

Fox News is as biased as CNN, or CNBC, or any of the other news stations. I do NOT go into churches and cast circles - I'm no longer Wiccan, and respect other's beliefs more than that. But on a "NEWS" channel, one that specifically asked for comments from Wiccans, shouldn't it be actual Wiccans who respond? I know that there are many on this site, some friends of mine, and they deserve to have their voices heard as well.

Update 3:

http://www.foxnews.com/foxfriends/index.html

Fox and Friends website. There is nothing posted yet about the Wiccan report. E-mail to friends@foxnews.com. Sorry, but there's not a better link at this time.

You are confused. Traditionally Wicca is polytheistic, or at least duotheistic. There are some monotheistic Wiccans as well, but they're less common. This has more been pushed in the last couple of decades, and mostly in poor resources. By some broad definitions, Paganism is any religion that is not Christian. That is the origin of the word-- Christians used it as a derrogatory term for people who did not believe in Jesus. So in the very most classic definition of the word, Wiccans would be Pagans, even though Wiccans didn't exist when the word was first used. The modern Pagan community counts many types of theists among it's own-- Pagan is NOT synonymous with polytheistic, though many Pagans are. But some are pantheistic, some are duotheistic, some are inclusive monotheists, some are animists or even atheists. You don't apparently know what Wicca is if you think all Wiccans are teens. That's like saying all Christians are children because you saw them lining up to sit on Santa's lap at the mall. Wiccan organizations and events don't even allow teens in without their family; but if you go to one of these events you find people of all ages. Unless you are determined to keep being dishonest and perpetuate misonceptions and propaganda, you should try educating yourself on other people's religion before challenging it.

I could not find anything inviting responses on FOX but there is a report about a book "Woman and Religion in the West" which refers to your comment about "Buffy" and wicca. It simply states that due to the hierarchy of the church, women are leaving the church about twice as fast as men. Due to the empowerment of women in "Buffy" and the witchcraft part of the program, the interest is wicca has risen due to the empowering aspect or the religion.

That a couple of news reporters made comments, no matter how accurate or ignorant, if one were to comment every time they disagree, there would not be much time for anything else.

    If you would like to do something that may have some effect on peoples lives, check the information at;

read the petition and accompanying article. It is about the direct discrimination toward Wicca representation in the military.

If you want to call for action, make it worth while, where it can help and where it can have some meaningful effect.

I think people leave on faith or religious practice for another if the first is not working for them. If the one they have meets their needs, they don't go to the bother of finding another, studying it, confronting the people around them and telling them they are leaving, etc just for the heck of it. They only go through that if they perceive that the other one has something better to offer.

So, part of the equation is what does Wicca have to offer, but the other part is what is not being met by Christianity.

The witches on Bewitched were often not so good, Samantha was pretty much benign, but she has some dangerous and crazed relatives.

The difference then was that is wasn't mystical, and there weren't many actual places one could go, meet with real witches and learn the trade.

Now there is...maybe shows like that aroused more interest than people realize.

I'm sorry people consider Wiccans to be bad witches..only time and experience will change that. The more people who meet and work with Wiccans and discover what kind of people they are, the more the foolish stereotypes will decline. That is how it works with all minority groups, it takes exposure for people to learn the truth.

Well first of all, does anyone really believe that people

would seriously adopt a belief system because they saw

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" or "Bewitched" on TV ?

Then tell Christinas not to worry because they'll get their

members back from "The Flying Nun"...

Look, the idea of Fox news is to get ratings.... that's all.

They will claim anything and say anything to that end.

Nobody should pay one bit of attention to it... especially

when you can do something more useful, like sit here on

yahoo answers asking Christians if they know that their

    holidays are Pagan...

I've seen that show - the combined IQ of the people that do that show can't possibly be over 75. They are all a bunch of morons.

But, like others, I see nothing on the page about this story and I'm not one to send a strongly worded email until I actually see what we're talking about. If I sent a letter every time Fox said something stupid.... well, I'd sit around all day writing letters :)

hehe... this just reminded me that my dad refused to watch CNN because he thought it was too conservative. I guess he never flipped over to Fox :)

Every time there is a popular image in fiction (be it TV, movies, books etc.) there is a group of fans (Christian or not) who become briefly interested in magic/Wicca. Only a small percentage actually begin to seriously study of actual Wicca. Some grow out (or do not) of their infatuation and move on to be vague fantasy fans and romantics that (mostly) know that the world does not work like the movies.

A very few take fantasy too far and become whack-jobs.

Every time there is a popular image in fiction (be it TV, movies, books etc.) there is a group of non-fans (usually Christian, always panic mongers) who freak out and say that all their little neglected children are turning into demon worshipers.

A very few of them are NOT whack-jobs.

If you want people to explore this issue, a link to the article, or to where they are "calling for Wiccans to respond" would be helpful.

Edit- "shouldn't it be actual Wiccans who respond?"

Actually, if some open-minded Christians wrote to them and told them to stop being so bigotted, that would have a much greater impact.

Edit2- " There is nothing posted yet about the Wiccan report. E-mail to friends@foxnews.com."

Let me get this straight . . . . , you want people to email Fox over something some anonymous poster on Y!A says happened?

With all due respect, until I can see the issue for myself, I'm afraid I won't be emailing anyone.

I think they are ignorant Christians, and really to take a comparison as Bewitch and Buffy so seriously is funny especially from Fox! People should be able to be educated and have a choice that is well informed regarding what religion is best for them.

I have to agree with tyrsdottir. Unless you can point to something that says they are asking for views, or even point to something where they say the really disrespectful things about Wicca that you're claiming they said, I am not going to send them an email out of the blue or the request of someone on the Internet. That's called ranting.

You claim they invited people to respond. Please indicate where they said that. That's all we're asking.

It's Fox. I do not know a single person, Christian, atheist or pagan who actually takes what they say seriously. I know there are those out there who do, but no one I know at any sort of educated level.

So no it doesn't bother me. Wicca has a wide enough base that I'm sure they are going to be getting some serious emails though.

    Idiots.
