Why...oh why...I just can't understand...??
I still can't understand why people (any race, any sex, any age, any education level) purposely misspell words. I'm under the impression that people think it looks "cool".
They are sadly mistaken.
It's not just intentional improper spelling...it's also the use of abbreviations, the "urban" language, the poor sentence construction and lack of punctuation.
Any theories?

This is in the etiquette section because this directly affects many aspects of etiquette.
It is a petty issue...and I'm not "disgruntled"...just a little irritated and I'm curious about other people's opinions.
Texting has no place where there is an entire keyboard at your fingertips. Type slow? Then practice. I can probably type an entire 3-4 line sentence in the time it takes for someone to text one line. I don't even look at the keyboard.

Thank you; I thought I was all alone.
I particularly dislike ur or your for you're.
I tried to help someone with their, there and they're recently, because I thought they were asking for help.
Instead of thanks I got a particularly vitriolic response.
I use slang such as gr8 for great when sending text messages, but nowhere else.
Hang in there; you're not alone.

Actually many schools and major companies are having a problem with this.
Now people shorten and such and say "I can flip into writing properly if it the real world". Not so. That mental laziness becomes a habit that shows clearly in real world writing.
You can often tell by the spelling. It show in word pacing. But it more shows in how a person puts thoughts together and how effectively they communicate a concept. It is if a person who is used to using text speak have basically trained their brain to use short cuts.
And that is the problem. In any field there are people who are good at what they do. But the ability to communicate (people who write lazily speak lazily) and write effectively is the most prized skill be it socially or work wise.

It seems that in this era we are learning a different way than the way you have been taught. It is all about communicating via emails and text messages and the quicker the better, so nobody has the time or the inclination to sit back and write a correct sentence. My son was applying (on-line) for a part time job and he had to write a sentence or two, so he typed it up in text message form, so when I told him that he can't send it in like that because it was grammatically incorrect he just said not to worry that the spell check would take care of it! (He still got the job) I say we should bring back reading, writing and arithmetic!

I use "text" slang all the time. lol, omg, wtf? etc.
I still tend to put my question/answers in a format people can understand. What gets me is when people use so much slang and punctuation errors it looks like an alien language.
What really annoys me is when people point out words that are spelt wrong, but the question was understandable. Example: Should I call tomorow?
Then the person answering points out, "Its spelt tomorrow, not tomorow!" Maybe that's just a pet peeve of mine since I was never good at grammar or spelling.
I think if the question is written well enough to understand without straining your brain, then people should leave them alone. Even if they are using slang, or abbreviations. I also don't think yahoo answers is worth spell checking your writing...each and every time.
So my point...I agree with you 50%. :P

I believe that it is largely due to texting/instant messaging culture, in which you abbreviate words so that they fit into a small space (like a cell phone screen). In that case, it makes perfect sense to shorten words or come up with shorthand (gtg for "got to go", skool for "school," luv for "love.") Then I think the behavior of spelling like this carries over into people's notes and writing habits. Plus, in this day and age most documents (like those written for school or work purposes) are written over a computer with spell-check to catch any errors, so unless you are composing a piece of writing there, you don't need to worry about spelling, and in other formats it is just considered casual to use shorthand spellings. It irritates me too when people do this in most scenarios. In a text, I don't mind one bit. But in an email or post on a message board, I'd really prefer real words.

Welcome to the world of text messaging. People text message, get used to the quicker way to type a message, and then think it's cute when they're posting messages.
It only gives a strong message that they are very simple-minded and can't bother to type a real word.

When people purposely misspell something, I go crazy! I mean, when you do something like that, it makes you look lazy and unintelligent. Look at the difference in these two sentences:
i liek to eat tacos baitches!!!!!!!?...!
I like to eat tacos, they are a favorite of mine.
First one looks pretty stupid, eh?

What are you, a Harvard graduate?
I realize people need to practice good spelling and grammar, but this is a recreational activity (Yahoo Answers) and people should be allowed to type as they please (as it's harmless) without people whining about it.

lalalala well it is their life..sometimes it is easier but all the time you can't really understand what they're tryin to type
