Problem with kitten. Suggestions needed.?
I recently rescued two kittens over a week ago while I was biking. I found them near a swamp and I suspect somebody dumped them off. They're really friendly and seem to be adjusting to my place pretty well. I took them to a vet and gave them flea baths. They're about three months old. The only problem is that the male kitten has this strange habit of attempting suckle on the female cat. I'm guessing he was separated from his mother at a young age and has developed an oral fixation. Do kittens grow out of this? I really can't get him to stop no matter how many times I pull him away from her. I don't think the female cat appreciates the male cat trying to nurse from her. Any suggestions on how to get him to stop this behavior?

Your suspicions are correct. He MIGHT eventually grow out of it. Don't worry about the female - she will deal with it as long as she can and when she's tired of it, she will let him know about it! I have three cats and our youngest was a rescue (like our other cats) who we took at 9 weeks old. This is just a little bit too young, and she 'nursed' our largest cat up until she was about a year old. She would make the other cat's nipples red! And it made the silliest noise. But I kept out of it and she eventually stopped.

Ask a friend/neighbor/family member that you trust to take care of it until then. If not, then think of places your husband doesnt go often. A spare bathroom is perfect, because it is easy to quickly turn into a kitten proof environment. make sure no cords are out, close the toilet lid, and make sure no water is running at all. Place a crate or bed in the bathroom with blankets or a towel, some toys, and a small dish of food and water by the side. Also put a litter box or training pads on an easy to clean surface(also a good reason to use bathroom) Check in on the kitten every 3-4 hours, and as often as you can besides that. If there is no way that you can hide a kitten from your husband, say you are looking after it for a friend(make sure the friend is in on your plan). This is not lieing since your husband should be considered a friend and you are looking after it for him. Then just keep it hidden a day or two before christmas for more of a surprise. If none of these are possible, just give it to him as an early christmas present. I'm sure he will appreciate just as much as if it was on christmas. Then on christmas, wrap a bow around it, or put a bell on the collar, so it is still considered a christmas present

I just rescued a kitten, too, and he had the same problem. I have an older cat, and the kitten tried to nurse from him, and always tries to find something to nurse on before he eats. He has been slowly doing that less and less over the past month that I've had him. He seemed to learn on his own that it was unproductive.
However, I have a relative who had a cat who continued to try to nurse. He started sucking on his own stomach, and continues to do it to this day. I honestly don't know what the difference is between the two. One learned to stop, the other did not.
I've heard from lots of people that to get a cat to stop an unwanted behavior, you should squirt them (with a spray bottle, gently) with water when they misbehave. Eventually they will associate their behavior with the unpleasant feeling of being sprayed and will stop. Good luck!

Are they brother and sister?
Brother/sister cats will have sex and babies together if they live together.
You should get one of the cat (either the male or the female) to be adopted by another family so they're apart. If they're friendly, that means they were in close contact with humans and easily adoptable.
It's nice to rescue animals but it's just half the work...then you have to find them a good home.
Cats are not like dogs. They like their own territory.

Almost certainly the kitten will grow out of this. In the meantime I would try not to interfere. Unless he looks like he's hurting her I'd step back a little and wait for her to tell him off. If she doesn't like it she'll only put up with it for so long before telling him!

I'm sure he'll outgrow it, I rescued a mom who had her kittens in the house; when they were 12 weeks they started to wean, but I remember the trying a little bit after.....Maybe get a little bottle for the Whiskas milk to satiate him? He's still young.

He may not come out of this, then again he might. What you could do is go to the store and buy kitten milk. It comes with a bottle. He may latch to that instead of the female kitten.

I have two cats and sometimes they will do the weirdest things. Cats knead as a instinctual nursing activity and my 18 year old cat still kneads. I do not think that there is any issue as long as he is eating. Have fun with them and watch them carefully, if she doesn't like it she will most likely whack him and all will be right.

I would suggest getting a baby bottle and filling it with mild warm cream and have him suck on that. Also, it might help just to have a plain baby bottle nipple for him to use as a pacifier.

buy him a pacifier, when he tries to suckle give him that. you may have to dip it something that he really likes to get him started. you can also try giving him a stuffed animal to snuggle with. My boy has a stuffed dog he carries around with him
