Is the problem with my power supply or with my computer ?

I finished building my computer about 2 weeks ago..

and i was using an 850w enermax psu for my pc

well, it was "faulty" to say the least. it would screech really loudly until the circuit breaker in the garage disconnected power to the outlet.

this happened twice so im in the process of returning it,

and i just bought a new pc power and cooling 750w psu

when i attach all the various cables and everything, the only thing that works is the main connnector. only a couple things turn on (lights on the mobo, light on the mouse, and the lcd poster)

nothing else happens. the fans dont even turn on.

so... would my new psu be defective

or would my old psu have fried my system or something?

please answer... because im going to be without a *good* compter until i find out whats wrong..

thanks~

Update:

... im thinking its the new psu because the fan on that doesnt turn on either...

Update 2:

oh...wow.stupid mistake.

really stupid mistake.

stupid enough that im quite embarassed for putting this up.

i was pressing the reset button instead of the on button on the computer.

...in my defense, its 1:30am and im really tired. hehe. maybe i should get some more sleep from now on.

thanks for answering anyway. i probably wouldnt have rechecked the computer if i hadnt read these.

Update 3:

by the way.

the recommended wattage for my pc was... 675 but i got 750 in case i wanted to add anything extra.

i used the asus calculator---i have crosshair II

Update 4:

Either the motherboard and/or processor got trashed.

Is the fan from the heatsink plugged into the board, or the power supply directly? That would give you your answer.

the only time I have ever heard a power device screech was in Church. I helped out in the tech ministry. With 3 sound boards, several professional cameras and other electronic devices there was a couple of times when the power strips would overload and screech. They didn't fry our equipment but a motherboard is a lot more delicate. There is, of course, a possibility that it was just your fan but if you add the old power supply to the present problem u get fried motherboard. You can check out the following site to see what your rig needs to run.

this would help. It became taken from a communicate board which i prevalent. "attempt to substantiate (besides as you may) that the PSU works. once you've a multimeter, you ought to do a tough checkout of a PSU utilising the "paper clip trick". You plug the bare PSU into the wall. Insert a paper clip into the fairway cord pin and between the black cord pins beside it. it really is how the case skill swap works. It applies a floor to the fairway cord. turn on the PSU and the fan ought to spin up. If it would not, the PSU is lifeless. once you've a multimeter, you may examine all the outputs. Yellow wires should be 12 volts, purple 5 volts, orange 3.3 volts, blue cord -12 volts, red cord is the 5 volt standby. the grey cord is really significant. It sends a administration signal observed as something like "PowerOK" from the PSU to the motherboard. it would bypass from 0 volts to about 5 volts interior a 1/2 2d of urgent the case skill swap. in case you do not have this signal, your pc received't boot. The tolerances should be +/- 5%. If not, the PSU is undesirable. regrettably (convinced, there's a "gotcha" ), passing all the above does not recommend that the PSU is sturdy. it really is not being examined lower than any form of load. yet when the fan would not turn on, the PSU is lifeless." desire that helped.

i had a similar problem with the old computer that i was restoring the lights and everything turned on but the fan wont turn etc.... the mother board has a coin battery you either need to install it or you might need to take it out and put it back in. if this dont work then you might need a lesser PSU because your over doing it and thats why your having this type of problem if this also has not been resolved then you need a new motherboard.

you could try reseating the ram so snap it out and then back in sometimes when this happens the power turns some things on but not others and usually the screen and things like that dot work, if the motherboard light is on aswell as the mouse that means some power is getting to the computer so good luck

  • In 20 years of putting systems together and repairing them I got one bad new power supply. The odds of you getting two in a row are close to nil.

I think you have something else going on.

My guess is that you have something miswired. I would go over all the connections and make sure that the motherboard isn't grounding out.

sounds like a power supply that isnt giving power where it should... Id say the power supply is the 1st thing to check, not sure how its the chip the fan should go if it gets energy... the fan for the pcu maybe bad, but thats not the 1st thing to check..
