Difference between racing thoughts and thinking?

I'm supposedly bipolar, but psych diagnoses are not an exact science.

I'm just wondering how you can tell if you are having racing thoughts or just have a lot on your mind and are preoccupied with it.

Update:

here's an example...i was walking home from my nanny job yesterday and I really needed a way to get money in oder to pick up a prescription. Everything I looked at spun around in my brain to see if I could use it to make money. On top of this is was thinking about if I should even try to get the the prescription because I'd have to walk as my care in not operable and i needed to be home before my parents got there.

Update 2:

i'm not sure i would know if i was having manic thoughts because i've though like this my whole life so it seems like normal. i thought everyone had it.

Racing thoughts are typically manic thoughts. When the thoughts start going too fast, you typically forget what you were thinking 30 seconds ago or less.

Racing thoughts are when you're thinking of something and suddenly change topics or subjects and start thinking about something else totally different, kinda like switching channels on a TV. Also fast thoughts which you can't complete or that branch off to other thoughts. Hope this helps & good luck!

Racing thoughts are when you don't think things through. Let's say someone wants to commit suicide, they are having racing thoughts on when to do it, why they are doing it, how they are doing it. They don't slow down and think things through. They don't think what this could do to their family and friends. How it can change their life, They are just thinking of how to end all of the troubles they might have. When really they could seek someone for help and advice.

If your actions and thoughts are out of sync with each other and you're doing stuff before you've rationally decided to do it or not.

You know if you are experiencing the manic thoughts.
