Which is more badass the Army National Guard or Army Reserve?
i know im splitting hairs because both are basically the same but i want to know which is better in terms of "coolness". i already know that the guard does state and federal missions and gets more benefits (in terms of money for college).
both i know are brave and tough men and women but i am curious to know which is tougher. also i am planning on being a 68W (combat medic) and want to serve in an infantry unit if possible. Which branch would most likely allow that? I heard the guard would because they are "combat" oriented but not sure. need guidance from experienced military members
also im a sophmore in college. interested in physical therapy. planning to go grad school during.
im not joining because of the coolness. i just want to know which is cooler. either way i am joining .

This is in response to the poster who said that reservists and guardsmen are ridiculed in Basic Training:
Wanna know who's in my Air Force reserve unit? Guys who served active duty in Vietnam, folks who served active duty in the first Gulf War, people who served active duty in the Marine Corp, the Army, and the Navy.
Many of us are people who served active duty and for whatever reason got out to pursue a civilian career. We're Doctors, Nurses, teachers, firefighters, police officers, state troopers, college professors, coaches, plumbers, contractors, business owners, journalists, etc. We're people who have important jobs in our communities who have decided that we ALSO want to stay fully qualified in a SECOND career to serve our country. We somehow manage to do two things very successfully. And we think that's pretty "cool".
We're proud of the new young people we get in our unit. It makes me sad to think that you would ridicule them. They're people who are on the road to a successful career, and have decided to accept the ADDITIONAL challenge of juggling a military career with their other responsibilities.
We all have two jobs, and we take them both seriously. It's unfortunate that you don't find that worthy of your respect.

Coolness rating they are the same, the military coolness latter go Marine's, army/navy, airforce, coast guard, then anything in reserves or national guard. the difference id that if your in the reserves you have a chance that they will call you into active duty army, where national guard is exclusivly this nation. All of these branches are vital elements to defense however. You need to decide based on what is best for you. frankly best thing you can do is go to school then come in an officer.

I think the US Army Reserve is definitely better. You have much more options since you are federal, you can cross train with other reserve units in any state. It is also easier to find a new unit if you move to a different state. You get promoted much much faster. I know people who are 39 year old Specialists (E-4) in the guard and they have been in since they were 20 years old. Guard units also tend to have less money for sending Soldiers to schools and other training. I see no advantages that the guard has over the reserves other than that the units are sometime more tight knit since people tend to stay in the same guard unit for most of their career. This also means that it takes longer for you (the new guy) to become integrated with the unit.

The Guard has 8 Infantry Divisions, 14 Separate Infantry Brigades (roughly 3.5 more divisions). 17 Artillery Brigades, Scouts, Cav and 2 Armored Brigades. 3 ADA Brigades, 5 Engineer Brigades, 3 ea MP and Signal Brigades, 2 Aviation Brigades and 4 Aviation Groups, the 19th and 20th SF Groups, 1 ea Area and Corps Support Groups. They are bigger than the active Armies of several countries.
The Reserves has training and support, with a tiny smidgen of combat guy's.

Well. To be honest. I too am a sophomore in college. And to be honest in Basic Training, the national guard, gets the most ridicule. They get called the 'nasty guard' haha. Army reserve and National Guard get the same amount of money, no matter what people say. 4500$ for both. Exactly the same for benefits. A lot of people actually think they are different. But in reality they aren't. Also, in the national guard, you can be vulnerable to budget cuts. Unlike the Army Reserve. Also for training, you have more options to go places unlike the national guard.
Go army reserve my friend. Best Choice Ever Made

If you want to be cool join a band. If you want respect, loyalty, dedication, determination and learn a lot more about everything you thought you knew, join the Air National Guard or Army National Guard. They are BOTH great programs and will be "cool" fun and a good experience.

according to my fiancee, the reserve is better, since the national guard are considered "*******" but i wouldnt know, the navy, the air force, the army, national guard and marines all think they are the better one, and that all the other ones are lame, but as to the truth...it wouldnt matter, all the other armies will think you are lame, except your own, which will say that you are the coolest type in the us. haha good luck choosing

National Guard will be used to shoot civilians if the crap starts due to economy. Army reserve it is! But if I were you i'd join Navy. At least you will be fighting war from remote location.
