George Allen and Minority Outreach...perfect together?

Washington Post, Tuesday, August 15, 2006

"At a campaign rally in southwest Virginia on Friday, Allen repeatedly called a volunteer for Democrat James Webb "macaca." During the speech in Breaks, near the Kentucky border, Allen began by saying that he was "going to run this campaign on positive, constructive ideas" and then pointed at S.R. Sidarth in the crowd.

"This fellow here, over here with the yellow shirt, macaca, or whatever his name is. He's with my opponent. He's following us around everywhere. And it's just great," Allen said, as his supporters began to laugh. After saying that Webb was raising money in California with a "bunch of Hollywood movie moguls," Allen said, "Let's give a welcome to macaca, here. Welcome to America and the real world of Virginia." Allen then began talking about the "war on terror."

Depending on how it is spelled, the word macaca could mean either a monkey that inhabits the Eastern Hemisphere or a town in South Africa. In some European cultures, macaca is also considered a racial slur against African immigrants, according to several Web sites that track ethnic slurs."

Is this part of the reason why Republicans routinely receive less than 10% of the African American vote?

It says a lot about what Republicans REALLY think of minority voters.

I'm not from South Africa or from Europe but I knew that Macaca was the name of a monkey! Check it out. Anyone with an elementary education knows that and I doubt that Allen didn't know that his comment was racist and offensive. Also, 'welcome to America' is condescending especially when the student had been born in the U.S.! Allen thought just because he had brown skin that he just got out of a boat yesterday. Allen is from VA and it doesn't surprise me. This doesn't reflect on Republicans it just reflects on Allen and how his parents raised him.

Just when I though this dream couldn't get any worst, I just did. First McCain wins the Republican nomination, then he gets a cheerleader to be his vice president. Now this ! I can only imagine what will happen next. If anyone in the republican party is going to reach out to minorities, then it should be McCain and Palin. I do credit McCain for attending some minority events this year but not lately. I think they are afraid they might offend too many people in their base if they are seen talking with minorities.

It is amazing. It's sorta like sending the team of Mark Foley and Larry Craig to a Young Evangelicals conference. Maybe on the same ticket in '12?

    CRAIG / FOLEY '12 or FOLEY / CRAIG '12 ????
