Truthfully, if you are going by what someone said about the clutch bands being bad, you are already in trouble. There aren't any bands to change, per se.
It's more than likely a bad torque converter and clutch packs in the transmission.
If you want the worst case scenario, which i could be, then call several transmission shops in your area, and make sure they are ATRA certified.
Ask them what a totally rebuilt tranny and converter would cost.
You didn't say what kind of car, but I'm guessing between $1350 and $2000.

You need to go to a good car repair shop for an estemet.
shop around because this job depends on the make, model & year of the car.
