Abilify for BiPolar Disorder, how does it work for you?

I just started taking Abilify for BPD, and am worried that it will swing me into depression, since it is more for managing manic episodes. Has this happened to you, or anyone you know? Have there been any bothersome and/or troubling side effects. I just started taking it last night and it seems to make me very sleepy...which is ok right now. I'd rather be sleeping over dealing with the mental torture of my newly diagnosed BPD. I suspected that I was BP for years, and have had many, many 'episodes', but only was recently diagnosed. Anything you can tell me would be appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to the wild, wacky world of psychiatric meds. Abilify has a number of uses. It is an anti-psychotic for schizophrenia, a mood stabilizer for bipolar disorder, and can be combined with other meds for depression. You can also add it to your laundry, and all your clothing will come out cleaner and fresher than ever. (Just a joke.)

I have major depression and added abilify to my other meds about two months ago. So far, the results have been surprisingly good.

However, one of the most important things you should know about psych meds is that they can affect people VERY differently. I go to a support group for folks with depression, BPD, OCD, etc. One person reports great success with a certain drug, while the next person with very similar symptoms has no success with the same drug. Bad side effects will also vary from person to person on the same med. Please remember this whenever you hear good or bad news about a drug.

Hope this helps. Email me if you have a question.

EDIT: Make sure you have a good psychiatrist you can trust---instead of seeing a regular MD.

that's a very difficult question to provide a precise answer... First, Abilify is a clean anti-psychotic agent and there aren't any important study about it for struggling with undesirable. a minimum of those few study aren't any more adequate to make your recommendations up that Abilify is a brilliant struggling with agent in undesirable... yet Lithium has a lengthy heritage (better than 50 years) for utilizing in undesirable prevention... sure it has many damaging consequences yet a lot of them are proper in medical and lengthy time period compliant utilizing.... for my area i desire lithium first except very severe medical contraindications....

It was great with my mania, but did nothing for my depression.

But I've read many accounts on the internet by people who say it worked wonders for their depression.

The side effects, for me, were very mild, and only lasted a few days - slight headache and nausea, and a strange flickering sensation in my eyes. Perfectly manageable, and soon over.

Warning, do not make your condition worse with the doctors and their pills. Good luck. Unless you are physicall wounded, a broke limb, they are very dangerous for to your health. They are businessmen who aim to make a good living. All the mythology and advertising is BS. Just stay to yourself, lick your wounds, and take time to heal like any other animal. Mother nature knows best.
