Does anyone actually do their own homework research anymore?

Call me old fashion, but does anyone actually read a book or do research any more? It seems most of the kids these days ask the question online and spit out someone else's work. Yep, the great strides our educational system has achieved. Thank god there are some of us old people still around to do the research for the younger kids today.

As a side note, I do expect to be foot noted in all these reports I have helped people write.

Update:

For those who misunderstood, I am wondering about those who ask the questions on here, "I have a report due and need some facts on..." Seems to me, you could actually spend the time looking it up instead of having others do the work.

I confess those thoughts cross my mind every time I read those kind of questions and I can't help going back to memory lane, when I was in high school, in the library, for hours and hours.....

So I stopped answering them because I feel I am betraying their parents, with some exceptions of course. Like this kid w/his teacher forcing the class to watch Al Gore's movie and write a paper, but the kid wanted more info to write against the movie and AGW, so I answered it in an attempt to balance the situation ☺

The internet is a great resource for kids but sometimes it can play against those who believe that any web page will provide reliable info.

I read books and I do research about different subjects (current events, hobbies, work-related, etc), but I never form an opinion based on reading just a book, I need the internet.

It's probably not any different to how things were in the past, cheating has pretty much always been a problem for the educational system, whether it was copying others' work, putting in an older siblings work as one's own or smuggling notes into exams and then asking to go to the toilet and reading them there (I know of all three happening). It's more a case of the Internet making us notice those people since they come to us to ask for help cheating.

The Internet though does make it easier for teachers to find people who are cheating since teachers can easily get into the same archives that cheaters buy pre-written reports from and putting a sentence copied off the net into google often brings up the original source and Yahoo! Answers also includes a search box that would probably find the homework question a student asked if the teacher thought it might have been copied.

Shawn: They very probably don't, especially since it is very rare for any of them to want anything other than a pre-written essay (and they do need to learn research skills, which is better done by actually doing research than by asking others to give answers).

I think a lot of people do their own research as it is made very easy with the internet.

The only real problem is in people's ability to analyze data. Before the internet you had to read a book or check research papers. This had some sort of quality control on it as if you were not an expert you could not write a book on a subject and get it published easily.

On the internet it is easy to put up a page and a site and voice your opinion, regardless whether its based on facts or not. With all the free templates available, you can even present your opinion very professionally.

While I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their opinion and to voicing their opinion, no matter what it may be. It does open the door to a lot of "opinions" being passed on and taken as facts.

While there is nothing wrong with opinions, they do need to be separated out from facts. I think this is a skill which tends to get lost these days. Just take a look at the election campaigns, lots of opinions being thrown around, but does any party come forward with a clear, tactical economic strategy? I'd like to see some charts and statistics from economic specialists with proven success. Not all the drivel on whats good for the nation and we need to create more jobs and safeguard the housing market etc. We all know that already. How is it going to be done?

I have wondered the same thing since becoming addicted to Y!A. Kids have it so easy now. I remember having to spend hours at the library researching stuff and then coming up with my OWN conclusions. Not only the research papers but there are a ton of math problems people ask about on here too. It really hasn't been that long for me either... I am only in my late 20s. I guess if I had Y!A when I was in school, I would have probably used it too.

I'm going to play Devil's propose right here and say I do not consider that is the case in any respect :D It takes only some mins to duplicate and paste the query, and whilst you are ready you'll play video video games or do major homework. I, admittedly, didn't whole the various required studying of my senior yr, and I can see in which plenty of those persons are coming from. I did not conclude The Great Gatsby. I had no want to conclude the Great Gatsby. I nonetheless do not desire to conclude The Great Gatsby. Finishing the Great Gatsby to me might be like slamming my head in opposition to a wall for a couple of hours. Now if a few sadist gave me a dull ebook (ie No extraterrestrial beings, Wizards, or Vampires) that might by no means curiosity me, threw a worksheet at me, and stated "Read it and fill it out, betch!" I probably a bit green with envy. Anyway. I used to be a large cheater. And it helped =) I cheated for the designated questions and Spark Notes'd my technique to know-how the *BIG THEMES* so I would BS my manner by way of the essay. I acquired an A within the path :D And I by no means had to realize that crap once more. I slipped by way of plenty of needless paintings, acquired the topics, discovered the essays, and aced the path with out ever having to conclude my snoozefest studying record. I'm a dependable cheater. I don't have any concern with serving to persons out with know-how the ebook with out studying the ebook. It's as much as them to ensure they are equipped to cheat the last.

Well, CrazyCon, I can''t remember if I've ever agreed with you before but there's a first time for everything!

You're very right and I love the bit about wanting credit in the footnotes...

Personally, I won't help the obvious homework questions because it seems to me that I would be instrumental in ruining their lives by undermining the educational process: You know, 'give a man a fish/teach a man to fish'?

Aww... Heretic, you''ve gone and burst my bubble - you mean to say that the Easter Bunny isn't real either?

Are you saying that books and online information are that much different? Authors write books, and post articles online, but it's easier to find online. You aren't doing your "own" research if you're reading a book, or reading off a site. Books are usually more reliable, but if you really want to learn firsthand with only your own experiences, then don't read, just go out and do experiments.

Reading books and reading articles online are one in the same.

Okay for those that haven't caught on. Most of those are bogus questions. Either used to help affiliates gain point rankings, or to gain clarity on resources.Just call me paranoid, I' ve seen to many shenanigans on this forum. To accept something as black and white. I really wish I was wrong and could believe in integrity.

ed: I should also said; you and I both can do it but we don't

ed2: (AC), just the contrary. You are entitled to believe what you wish...even an egg toting bunny.

When I was young, there were 'cliff notes' and a number of other non-internet ways to abbreviate the learning experience. They weren't as available as what's online, but I would suppose many still do their own research.
