Why did 2/3 of the Republicans in the house vote against the $700bn bail out plan?
At a press conference moments ago Nancy Pelosi stated that this was a bipartisan vote. 60% of the Democrats voted in favour, 67% of Republicans against. Bipartisan? Are the Republicans fiddling while the Dow Jones burns (Down more than 700 pts a few minutes ago as a result of the bill being thrown out) and destroying Mr. McCain's candidature at the same time. Maybe they should put the country and indeed the global economy before their own jobs.
So all of you that are against the bill want to sit by and let this situation get worse and worse. And believe you me it will effect each an everyone of us WORSE and WORSE. It won't just stop at the doorways of the greedy bankers etc. who let this thing get way out of control. Inflation, higher interest rates, falling pension funds, rising unemployment, all of these things will be worse if they let this crisis play itself out. Isn't it worth trying to stabilise the situation?
This is not a give away the money will have to be repaid.

Their phones were ringing off of the hook and their emails crashing with the number of average Americans that were contacting them saying they were against the bailout. Most of the Republicans are defending their vote by indicating that they did what their constituents wanted and voted against it. I think they just didn't sell this bill to the average person who didn't live beyond their means with credit, didn't buy more house than they could afford or leverage against it while the price of real estate was skyrocketing. Maybe those who voted against the bill felt that the responsibility shouldn't be put totally on the American taxpayer. Meanwhile, we are watching a massive sell off on Wall Street as a result.

Well i do think its better to vote against the bill - as it will only delay the mess we're in further. If the bill goes through - mark my words there'll be many more bailouts in the next few months on top of the 600B.
What puzzles me is that republicans have no 2nd thoughts to support a 3 Trillion dollar pointless military exercise in a dessert somewhere, but they say no to 600B spend that would also help their citizens a little bit.

Why did so many Democrats vote against the bailout. It goes to the heart of the difference between Democrat and Conservative belief.
Dems said OK to taxpayers assuming the risk. Conservatives said they want a WORKOUT not BAILOUT. A workout makes the capitalists assume the risk and requires them to buy insurance with the packages of loans, like when a homebuyer has to buy mortage insurance. The taxpayer is not a risk in that situation and the problem is alleviated.

i'm registered Republican. does no longer mean I save on with the Rep social gathering for all time. i do not comprehend sufficient about the plan to assert I agree or disagree yet I do desire Republicans are making their judgements in accordance with their ideology and by no ability on partisan politics. we want to fix this economy and everyone needs to objective to do the entire. Republicans and Democrats alike. i do not comprehend what the right mission to do is yet they want to artwork at the same time to make it artwork. it really is why they're elected.

Better question is why did Democrats want the fraud to continue.
Hmmmmmm....wouldnt be for example how Frank Raines, Obama financial advisor, made $90 MILLION off Fannie Mae in just 6 months would it? Im sure it has nothing to do with the FACT that the top 4 campaign contribution recipients were
1. Chris Dodd
2. Obama
3. Kerry
4. Clinton
Naaaahhhhh, couldnt be that?!

I love that you are bringing up that Republicans aren't being bipartisan and yet ignoring the 40% of Democrats that voted against the bailout and the 33% Republicans that voted for it....showing true discord with both parties over this bailout.

That bailout plan would have given away more US taxpayer ro foreign firms rather than keep it within our own shores where it belongs in the first place. This was all about 700 BILLION dollars do you understand that? Why do you Democrats think it is ok to help foreign banks when our own banks here at home are dying and going into chapter 11 or out of business?
We need to keep jobs secure at home not help the Royal Bank of Scotland or any other FOREIGN bank??? WAKE UP DUDE!!! NO MORE LIBERAL GIVEAWAY PROGRAMS, THAT IS WHAT CAUSED THIS MESS TO BEGIN WITH.
THANK YOU JIMMY CARTER AND BILL CLINTON FOR DRAFTING THIS OLD LEGISLATION THEN MODIFYING IT IN 1996 UNDER CLINTON THAT GAVE LOW INCOME PEOPLE SUB PRIME INTEREST RATE MORTGAGES TO BEGIN WITH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
BAD RISKS = BAD LOANS = THIS CURRENT MESS WE ARE NOW IN UP TO OUR EYEBALLS.
DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Republicans are against bigger government and that's what this plan is. The devil is in the details and you may want to thank the Republicans for slowing this down. The plan proposed would have created a another HUGE government bureaucracy, put no time tables on them, and written them a blank check.
I'm for the bailout but we need terms, conditions, and restrictions on the powers this new body will have. We can't allow our panic to blind us.

Since all most all American's are against the Bail out, it sounds like the republicans are doing a better job of representing the people.

The people who got these loans are just as greedy as the ones who signed for them. I say let them swirl. People don't take responsibility for their actions and want the government to hold their hand and bail them out. Why do you think the Democrats are running Obama. They want the government to take care of them!
