I need to re-install windows xp into a dell computer. Do I have to buy the disk from Dell? ?
Would it matter if I brought Windows xp from Dell or not?
the hard drive is gone. I need to have to reinstall a new hard drive and operating system.

you should have a restore built right into your computer. Shut it down, and when it start booting hold down the Shift key and the f11 key. It should put you in resore mode for a Dell

I tried using my windows xp on a Dell it would not work. We called in to find out it has to come from dell.Good luck cause it is not cheap.

Depends on whether or not the disc from Dell is cheaper. If you have a serial code on the side of your computer, it is perfectly legal for you to download a copy of the disc on one of many BitTorrent sites, as long as you use your own serial code. If not, you will need to purchase a copy from any local retailer or from Dell.

it should have come with the windows xp disc but if it didnt you can make your own windows xp recovery cd somewhere within your dell settings. i would shoot them an email just to see how if you cant find it on your own

Check with them if they offer some kind of "recovery disk" option. For example HP lets you have some a disk for free (shipping costs) to reinstall your OS.

No it does not matter where you buy it.
To bad you did not think of buying it with the computer.....
