Have you heard this news?

This is specifically directed to people in southern California (Los Angeles county, to be exact). Are you aware that as of October 1st (tomorrow), it will be ILLEGAL not to have your pets registered and spayed or neutered? Evidently, there are just WAY too many strays and all the animal shelters are having to euthanize animals at an alarming rate just to make room for new strays coming in, so finally, the county decided to do something about it. For anyone who doesn't get their pets registered and spayed or neutered, there will be a fine (I'm not sure how much, though). I'm wondering if there are any other areas of the country that are cracking down like LA County is. Does anyone know?

Update:

As I understand it, there will be (and actually already are) lots of low-cost spay and neuter facilities throughout the area. So I don't think that will be an issue.

    FANTASTIC!

on this site I have preached this until my poor fingers are numb.

i JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND.. why people wait to have their pets spayed until AFTER they have a litter and then POST a plea... "how do i get rid of these kittens/ puppies???"

    GLAD IT HAPPENED!

NOW if they can only outlaw de-clawing.

I am good with this law regarding your pets neutered/spayed. There are way too many cats and dogs without homes or people to care for them. Maybe it will cut down the animul abuse, I hope.I live in Northen California, so I guess and hope it arrives up here too.

All my cats (4) are neutered. They are strictly indoor only cats - they never go outside. But because they are all males I neutered all of them to avoid the spraying that male cats do.

I agree, people should be required to spay/neuter their animals. My dog is spayed. I didn't want puppies (she's an outdoor dog with her own kennel and dog house).

If people want to be pet owners they have to be responsible!

Great - so instead of cutting prices on neutering they will start issuing fines ( and you can bet that registration won't be free as they'll have to open up a whole new package of red tape just for that)

I wonder how many people are going to dump their poor pets in response to this. ;-(

hopefully they will have clinics with low cost spay and neuter programs to help those that cannot afford it.....

i havent heard it, but it would make a lot of sense. There is an incredible and unbelievable amount of stray cats makin' babies who are wandering the earth, over-poopulating (and over populating) the earth. :-)
