Why are the Republicans still so favoured in States like Alabama & Texas?
As a British citizen.... America in general is a bit of a comedy circus for the rest of the world. Every presidential election that comes along I always think it's hilariously funny that the states of Alabama & Texas are so far in favour of the republicans. More so this year that the democratic candidate happens to be black.
It's always been a bit of a very, very sad stereotype that a majority of people from those states remain (even in the year 2008) totally racist.
Don't you all just get a bit tired of this? Seriously move on, we no longer live in the times of Abraham Lincoln.
For 8 years the Republicans and George Bush have made America and more importantly Americans a complete laughing stock. Why on EARTH would you vote McCain?
I think this oppinion is shared by most outside of America.
For those of you saying "oo, sort your own house out before commenting on others" well for your information, I left the UK a year ago because i was sick of our goverment, and i currently live in Sweden.
It was a constructive question, I wanted intelligent feedback and answers as opposed to abuse.
Cate is right, you should all read her answer. An American that agree's that living outside it appears a complete Disaster.
fuzzymime - your answer - completely besides the point. I did'nt want a History lesson, nor is that relevant, I'm talking about 2008.
Read the question again.

As an American citizen living in Australia I can confirm this statement is true. "As a British citizen.... America in general is a bit of a comedy circus for the rest of the world."
To the ones getting uppity about the question all I will say is people in glass houses ought not throw stones. The foreign policy of the USA affects other countries so other countries do have and are ALLOWED to have an opinion on this. Deal with it.
Source(s): Methinks survivor ought to read my answer again. "but you can't get away from the fact that America funded the IRA to blow up the British people. How does that prove your superiority?" Eh? What the hell has that got to do with anything? And putz, it wasn't "America" it was certain Americans. How do I know? because my other passport is Irish and I, like most people in the Republic oppose the IRA. So why don't you address the question that was asked? No one has said that America is superior, in fact, at the moment I'd say it's the opposite. Oh and by the way, in case you couldn't work it out, I AGREE with you that America is taking the rest of the world down the tubes with it. - gregory_dittmanLv 71 decade ago
The blue mostly Democratic states are in a major fiscal meltdown. California's and New York's state government combined probably owe more money than Britain owns. All the deep blue states are heavily in debt. They have too many social programs, too many unions plus their high taxes just bleed the states of jobs. Meanwhile the fiscal conservative red states all have budget surpluses. Even the poorest states in our nation, Mississippi and West Virginia have budget surpluses. The Republican main economic planks of small government and low taxes work on the state level. The big problem on the national level is all those social programs which take up 2/3 of the national budget and leaves a $300 billion budget deficit next year. If the Republicans could cut those social programs to balance the budget they would although nobody would vote for a Republican president.
The Democrats owned slaves, created the KKK and keep the minorities in poverty by providing welfare but no jobs. Most of the small and medium sized business owners are Republicans. The Republicans are the ones keeping the minorities employed.
The Democrats are on record, from 2004-2007, opposing Republican regulation on housing loans and Democrats promoted the kinds of loans that has caused this world wide mess. Bush tried 12 times to get some regulations.
On the national level, Bush named three national enemies, Iraq, Iran and North Korea. Now it's just Iran. After Iran it's some terrorists, gangs and pirates. Europe can just pack their armies away like they have been, many of which don't have enough money to send their troops outside their boarders and where "an army of one" is a literal phrase. If it wasn't for the U.S., Europe and other U.S. allies would have to greatly increase their troops and you can forget about NATO. If there wasn't a U.S. presence, NATO would fall apart like it fell apart confronting Yugoslavia. Every country would be on its own. China would just gobble nations as if they were nothing.
Bush has been funding Africa to the point where the top administration funding Africa has been the Bush administration. Bush has high poll numbers in Africa.
Here is where you Brits should be scared about Obama. he really doesn't care about anybody but himself. He has thrown all his former contacts under the bus. He is no ally of Europe. When things go bad, call Texas or Alaska because the federal government won't be listening.

Your are not going to like this, because the truth hurts. Sarah Palin would actually win most of the states, and in 2012, would become the 45th President of The United States. Not only do I know this, but so do most Democrats and all Liberals. I know they know this, because they show every day have afraid they are that Palin may run. Fear of Sarah Palin is the only reason that Democrats go out of their way to try to discredit her at every opportunity. Example: Sarah Palin had absolutely nothing to do with the shooting in Tucson, AZ, and everyone knows it. They know it now, and they knew it then. Only partisan Democrats tried to focus blame on Sarah Palin, and still ignore the truth about Jared Loughner. Another example: Many want to blame the tea party for the shooting because of the cross-hairs placed on several key districts in the 2010 elections. No one said anything about the bulls-eye targets placed on Republican districts in 2008 by Democrats. (Hey Liberals, your hypocrisy is showing again.)

I wouldn't expect anyone outside the states to know USA's history. Quick history lesson.
The "South" consistently voted Democratic. Remember in the American Civil War, Democatic voting members of the south, voted to pull away from the rest of the states, the states in the "north". Lincoln fought to keep the country together.
The South hasn't really turned and started voting for Republicans until the 1960's. They have really held onto the core values of the conservative right. They still hold true to family and country. Still believe in the individual, and the freedom of choice. And religion. Once the Democrats lost these values, and started taking a socialist turn, that is when they lost a good portion of the south and that's why they won't get it back. Race has nothing to do with it. There are some racists still all over the country, in every state, but by and large, members of those states disagree with his politics, not his race. I understand that a Brit wouldn't understand these sort of things. It is a myth and a stereotype that conservatives are racists. Just look up David Duke, a member of the Democratic Party, here in America. He was a member of a hate group, a pretty famous one at that.
As a Brit, you know nothing of exactly how much you have to thank America for. One of which is, if it wasn't for us, you would be speaking in German. We don't pander and cater to those that would destroy us. We do what must be done. If a natural disaster happens, the world looks to us to help out. We get yelled at for not helping, not helping enough, and when we do, we get yelled at for sticking our nose in other people's countries.
America does what it must, cause there is no one else. It's America that funds the World Bank, NATO, the UN, and untold number of other organizations. I, for one, would like to see another tyrant start crap in Europe or Asia, and America stay out. Watch the world cater to this guy and get betrayed at the same time. Much like the Russians to Hitler. The French and English tried to appease him and he took it and still did what he wanted. How long would England last, how long would he world last, how long would Europe last, if America did nothing around the world.

Ignorance and religion. (and money of course!)
It's clear to see that the people on here have no tolerance of any criticism. Hmm, just the same as Aussies.
To JC , iviolate, HAMPER and Cate. It is very easy to call people names, but you can't get away from the fact that America funded the IRA to blow up the British people. How does that prove your superiority?
We hear about 9/11 all the time, because it was Americans who were killed, and they of course are more important than anyone else in the world. But don't forget the rest of the world is "producing" for American consumption, which is more than any other nation's.
Now we have the situation of the collapsing world economy because of American mismanagement and greed, and all the countries that hitched their star to America's wagon are going to go down too!

For most of the 20th century, when white supremacy in the Southern U.S. was the norm and open racism was not only tolerated but encouraged, the Democrats were the dominant party in the South. It's only been in the last 20-25 years that the Republican party has made inroads into the Southern states, so I can't totally accept the theory that Republican = racist.
I do agree that it must look a circus from the outside. Heck, it looks like a circus to a lot of us from the inside. ;)

The Republicans serve the wealthy in this country at the expense of the poor and middle class. Yet they are masters at exploiting peoples poverty, lack of education and racism in order to manipulate them into supporting them. Progressives are fighting hard to address these three issues. They are working hard so that every child can obtain a good education and have good work opportunities that will allow them to meet their immediate needs as well as save money to invest in the future for themselves, their families and their communities. If we can ever do this, we can turn these states from red to blue.

Wow, that's enlightening. I lived in England for a year and was stunned by the blatant racism that was prevalent everywhere I went.
Where else, but the UK, can you turn on the radio or TV and regularly hear white people use the "N" word so freely and so often?
When you get your news from the BBC or CNN World, your "facts" of the U.S. tend to be somewhat distorted.

If you find our country hilarious and if you think that we are a "bit of a comedy", well, you should see your judges and Parliaments with all of those men wearing wigs, that is a comedy and I'm not even mentioning their behavior.. If you want to live in our country, please try to understand it and be respectful like I'm sure I will do in your country. Your jealousies and hateful for our way of life and country it is also hilarious, don't you think.
You make stupid comments about our country and then you asked for intelligent answers, ain't that a bit confusing ?
When you leave Sweden, where are you going to go next, not USA, right?
