Are there any organizations geared towards making restitution to Native Americans?

I've always been saddened at how Native Americans were treated and how the US government even tried to destroy their culture. I am curious to know if there's an organization one can join to help restore their way of life and culture?

There are lots of tribal organizations, the Indian Child Welfare Act (helping to prevent further abuse of children needing to be adopted or put into foster care), First Nations Ministries, most denominations also have ministries to Native Americans.

Keep in mind, the Native Americans are the ONLY minority living in the US who are living as a conquered people. This has damaged the collective psyche of the Native Americans, and that, along with the broken treaties and ill treatment from our government (and our citizens), has led to a deep mistrust.

And sadly, our government is STILL breaking treaties with the Native Americans. For instance, promised allocations for education and housing have never been completely funded.

And our government STILL has not issued a formal apology to the Native Americans (and some reportedly don't want the gov. to do so, since they are still breaking treaties).

You can research this to find out which organization you'd like to join to help. And thank you for doing that.

We have our culture and way of life, it may not be exactly the same as it was 400 years ago, but then again no ones is. If you want to help, learn American history and don't forget it, celebrate your own culture, and watch the politicians closely. There is nothing anyone can do to restore what has been lost, stopping the theft of what has been gained, however, is a worthy and accomplish-able goal.

Now in response to one of the previous answerer's who stated that Native Americans do not pay taxes, that is a lie. The tribes, being independent nations, do not have to pay taxes, the same way America does not pay taxes to China. We, as individuals, however, do pay taxes just the same as everyone else.

I too have been saddened--but such is life. I didn't see the italians try and make restitution to the english and germanics etc for conquering europe. I didn't see the chinese/southern asisans making restitution to the russians and easter europeans for the mongol invasions. In fact of all the native people displaced by exansion via force majure the United STates was the only government I know of who even tried to coexist (how many of the original inhabitants of europe have their own reservations). In fact the US made them US citizens and allowed them their own tribal lands. Yes there were excesses on both sides--I used to live near a monument in texas to settlers men women and children massacred by the cherokee. The native americans that live on indian land do not want your help to preserve their culture.

yes, they are called casinos and favorale tax laws.

    indians don't pay US taxes.

also if you think that the us just came in and wiped out the indians and put them on reservations is the whole story, you need a history lesson- there is no denying that that was the result, but there were a series of conflicts and issues that led up to that.

it wasn't like the us came and rounded up the "poor peacefull indians" and put them on reservations.

there were battles, indian attacks, colonist reprisals, indian reprisals and escalations back and forth on both sides.

i'm not saying the end result was right or fair- but the indians are not blameless either.

look at the colony at jamestown and the attacks by indians against settlers- look at the vinland sagas for the actions of the "skraelings" (viking term for indian).

the indian issue is a difficult one, not solely the responsiblity of the US.

truth is that reservations today have many problems- but because of thier status as an independant nation (why they don't pay taxes), the responsiblity for thier drug and alcohol abuse rates among other issues falls largely upon thier own communities.
