Very simple beginner reading books?

I'm looking for very simple reading books for pre-k to K grade level. Books with repitive words and simple sight words. Example: See the dog. See the cat. See the bird. See the cow.....

Does any one have a title..series...or suggestion about how to search for such books since I dont have a title.

We have the BOB books series and I'm looking for more simple books

Have you considered getting "Hooked on Phonics"?

It cost about $200, and goes all the way from the very beginning up to high school level.

If you wish to get only the first couple of books, you can find good equivalents in stores which sell supplies to teachers.

My daughter and I went through the first "Hooked on Phonics" book and about five pages of the second book, and she was reading on her own.

I also got a book with blank pages and made my own easy reading book, with silly sentences and crayon drawings (mostly stick figures).

That way, we could make up our own stories about our family, her friends, our cats, and the town we lived in.

The Step-Into-Reading series is great. There are 3 Steps and the first step books are very simple. We aren't reading yet but have almost the whole series of the step 1 and 2 books featuring Thomas. The great thing is they have many that feature characters that kids love such as Thomas and Cars and Disney Princesses I think. They are pretty inexpensive. The most I've ever seen them for was like $4. They are available pretty much anywhere you find children's books. I've gotten them at Target and Wal-Mart and Toys R Us. I'm sure bookstores would carry them. Here is a list of them from Amazon

There is a way to skip beginner reading books. My daughter STRUGGLED with the BOB books even though she knew all her letters and sounds. She hated reading and hid all the books in the house. She wouldn't read any books that had the same words over and over because they were boring.

I stumbled across the book "teach your child to read in just 10 minutes a day." at the library. It was the best thing in the world. It had three steps. Step 1) the first 100 words. done with homemade games. She did this in about three weeks. Step 2) reading the first sentences. She did this in about 6 weeks. There were 11 pages to read with 12 sentences each. Step 3) the rest of the sounds in our language, this took two months. It had 22 more sounds with 3 sample sentences for each. At this point, my daughter started kindergarten. She knew so much about reading that she passed off all five levels of sight words the first day in one try only struggling on "said" and "been". This is when she actually started reading books. She didn't need any easy, repetitive books because her foundation was so solid, she went straight to story books and they are so fun. She reads beautifully and she is in love with reading. I give all the credit, to the brilliant method of Sidney Ledson.

The kids I tutor like the "Now I'm Reading" series. it's like Bob's Books but with a little more humor and the illustrations are in color. There are a number of leveled sets. Amazon has them and I've seen them at Barnes and Nobel and Borders. Each set of books comes with reward stickers and there is a small teachers' guide in each set.

  • You might be able to find the old Dick & Jane books. I've got one from when my grandmother was a little girl. "See Jane. Jane is a girl. See Dick. Dick is a boy. See Spot. Spot is a dog." There's also the Spot books about a puppy named spot. We've also got books from disney about baby mickey and friends..their really simple reads.
