  • Horse registery naming rules?

My friend has a 1/2 draft 1/2 quarter horse gelding and wants to register him. I know the different registerys have different rules about official names. Like how many characters long or starting letter and what not. But does any one know what registery he might go into and what the naming rules for that group are? Both his parents have a long list pedigree papers.

  • how do you get a horse to trot beside you?

I want to train and practice my almost 2 year old to go into a halter on hunter in hand class but his favorite gait is walk and nothing I've done so far can convince him to go faster. Other than that he's got great ground manners. Lounging is still a fairly new concept and we're working on going as well clockwise as counter clockwise. He has worn a saddle but is still getting used to the bit. Any suggestions? He tends to not care at all if I use a whip and a rope swinging does more to motivate him into motion but not much. But on the good side hes totally not spooky with new things. He'll make a great trail horse one day.

  • What are the moves of Gaited horses?

I want to start playing with a Paso Fino and hes gaited. i've only been on a gaited 1x before..briefly and I remember they move very different. Do they have different verbal cues as well? Like you'd tell a non gaited walk, trot, canter. What would you say to a gaited to make them move faster? What is it that makes them move differently? I suppose to ride a gaited I would just sit back to everything instead of posting or leaning a bit more forward?

  • How to teach a stubborn horse to canter?

I'm having a hard time teaching my draft cross mare to canter. She really doesnt want to get into the gait.

I've gotten advice from a trainer out at the barn to teach her how to lounge on line and do neck flexes so she'll give to the bit better and I have and I've also used the round pen but still she refuses to go from trot to canter. I've gotten her into canter a few times clock wise for a few steps but never counter clock wise. And I can get her into the canter going down a street fairly nice (for her) but it still takes a bit of nagging. I hate to nag. Whips and spurs dont really work on her either.

So I know she knows the cue to canter.

In the big sand jump/pleasure ring if I ask going counter clock she locks her neck and turns in real quick. Its frustrating.

I'm sure theres important details I've left out of this description. I can email more if needed.

Does any one have an idea how to teach a horse to move into a canter when their too lazy to do it?

  • draft horse weight loss problem?

My draft cross mare has started to drop a lot of weight. We upped her feed quite a bit over the last 3 weeks and her hay too and did an extra wormer too but still shes dropping weight. I put her in a nice blanket in case she was shivering the weight off but thats not working either. She gets rode about an hour 2x a week like ususal but of course she doesnt have the energy like she used too.

So any ideas why and how to get her to recover those pounds? Every week I can see more loss instead of gain. I'm worried.

  • horse bits, transitions, speed control?

I have a draftX mare that I'm trying to teach not to lock her neck and turn in when asked to go faster than a walk. Working her in a round pen has helped as have using side reins. But still the problem persists to a lesser degree yes but I am wondering if perhaps a stonger bit than a plain full cheek snaffle will work.

Ideas? I ride her mostly english. We have use of round pen, trails and a large sand jump ring. Her back is evenly wet in the right spots so I dont suspect saddle soreness.

Any other tips for keeping her straight and responsive? I have been pondering a hackmore but not I'm not sure...

During the hot part of the summer she was comming along very nicely at the walk/trot but now that its cooling off her moves have gone sluggishly slow and almost unresponsive to leg/feet commands. I am almost reluctant to keep teaching her the canter now that basic trots have become unreliable.

  • dentist prices?

My 7 year old needs 1 or 2 of his baby teeth yanked out of the way so the adult tooth that is already poked out behind it can finish comming out straight. The dentists over the phone are of course being mesterious about the prices. We have a pathitic coverage for it so assume we dont have any. Any idea how much it'll cost?
