The fear of what could happen and riding on the edge of the probability that it will happen and the ability to keep one in suspense and eager to find out what will happen next, a page turner.

Try to tap into a person's fear.

The best scary stories at some point make a very personal connection with the person hearing it. This is why things in general that are frightening for all people, things like: Murders, stalkers, psychos, hauntings... are the subjects to some of the best and most fearful stories you may have ever heard.

It's not scary when you read it. It's scary when you lay down to sleep in your room with your lights off and you think about the book.

It's the human imagination that makes horror stories scary. I haven't found a book that scared me at night or anything....because most are vivid images. "Black haired japanese looking woman with white robes..."

nothing scary about that unless you see it in the movies.

There's something called "Universal Themes." That means it is something common to EVERYBODY in the world. Like, falling in love, the hero who gets the girl, losing a loved one, etc.

Something truly scary is something we ALL understand. It's something basic, like being afraid of the dark, a fear of monsters or animals, ghosts, fear of violence, weapons, death. You know, your typical horror story.

One of the best things is to take one common idea and turn it into something dark and edgy. Take something average and friendly but give it a twist... like a fun day at the waterpark ruined by some kind of underwater creature.

How do you do it? Just concentrate on whatever makes those little hairs on the back of your neck stand up. Whatever makes you hold your breath. And once the story comes to you, and you can't sleep, and you keep on thinking about it...

    WRITE IT DOWN!

    good luck!

okay, I just want to say some chain mail isn't real just to clear that up. But if you use like there was a 16 year old girl named Lexi or something and she was home alone... Scares me so much! I personally hate chain mail it's literally the worst stuff I read or hear! It gives me the chills! 😁

what makes a story scary, is whether its real or not.

examples) the strangers, the zodiac, saw etc

because then you know that its true and that it could happen to you too
