Would a catholic nun getting gang raped by 40 Hindi men be considered "Christian persecution"?

http://www.gulfnews.com/world/India/10254327.html

Is there any doubt that this is state-sponsored persecution of Christians in India? Consider how the police responded.

QUOTE "State police failed to stop the crimes, failed to protect me from the attackers, they were friendly with the attackers," Sister Meena told a news conference on Friday. END QUOTE

Update:

Markyyy - Yes, I would.

Update 2:

Acid - so you don't condone rape but she was asking for it?

It is Christian persecution. Just like when the Jews were persecuted in Nazi Germany. This nun was raped and the government has done little or nothing at all to stop these attacks on the Christian minority in India. They seem to have started in the 90s when Hindu Nationalist political parties rose up and attacked Christians simply because they're Christians. Odd thing is that India is secular (at least they claim to be) but so many have profound ties to religion that they're willing to turn the other way to these events.

Hindus have been rising up and killing Christians in India for some time. They don't like the fact that Christians go out and convert people. That's what causes this violence.

When I read about this earlier I thought only one person had actually raped her while others held her down, and that another person had attempted to rape her but didn't follow through. Then she was paraded half naked through the streets. So, I'm a little curious about your article saying 40 men raped her.

I read since the local police will not do anything, she went to the equivalent of India's FBI to investigate, but they refused to get involved.

You mean "Hindu". It's not in the spirit of Hinduism. If this is state-sponsored, it means the government is hijacking religion for their own ends. Also, if they're Vaishnav, and most Hindus in India are, even touching a non-Hindu is forbidden by their religion according to some people's interpretation, so they are violating their own beliefs even on their own terms. Clearly this is also against Brahmacharya. Not very good Hindus, in other words, and nothing to do with true religion. Possibly everything to do with Indian nationalism and exploitation of humanity's basest and most vicious tendencies. If they're right about reincarnation, it'll be a LONG time before they get a chance at living a human life again.

Yes, I think so. A comment: if it is anything like the past, people are disturbed by Christian conversions and all sorts of accusations will come out. But they are false accusations if this is truely the time for India to discover Christ. It does not have to be that way and is sad. But Christ was killed for his teachings, and violence may still be the reaction by some when they hear it.

Religious violence in India has gotten out of control. Killings, rapes, and decapitations in the Christian against Hindu and Hindu against Christian factions is at an all time high. Both sides in this fight have performed more hideous acts than you could count. Both sides have forgotten completely the "peaceful" doctrines of their faiths.

It is terrible right now in India, and you are right... it does seem to be state-sponsored. Women are being attacked, raped, and murdered for their beliefs every way you look there.

We recently had a Lutheran Pastor from India come visit, and he shared some of what is going on.... it was enough to make you phyically ill. And all he wanted from us were prayers for the violence to stop......

Just FYI for some of you... this has been rampant for months now and has been covered by major newspapers across the world.

Christian persecution continues daily, and takes many forms. Raping nuns is one way, and the beating of a priest last week in India, invading a church, also last week in India, are other forms.

Militant Hindus are as bad as militant Muslims, militant Chinese Communists, or whatever.

I am a Catholic. And that was horrible. They must have looked at her as a Catholic nun or a Christian nun.I don't think it would make much difference to them as whether she was a Christian nun or a Catholic nun.

yes of course it is, although there are about 2 million catholics in india

that still represents only about 2% of the population.were you aware that persecution of christians in iraq is sharply risen?i know this is no worse than their persecution in india ,but the christians of iraq still say mass in aramaic, this is the closest to the words of christ verbatim, that we have and we're losing it.

It is a horrible crime. No woman deserves to be raped for any reason. But rape is not Christian persecution. The poster who said that persecution has to be systematic and over an extended period is spot on. I don't know how closely this fits the criteria, but it certainly takes more than the rape of a single nun to qualify as persecution.
