Pure breed dog or Mixed breed dog?

I want to get a labrador, but can't choose between a pure labrador breed and a labrador/golden retriever mix. Somebody told me it's better to get a mixed breed dog.

Update:

I'm adopting a dog from a dog rescue organisation... not from a pet store!

Update 2:

and in reply aries33, breed does matter in terms of temperament and health, etc.

From my experience mixed dogs tend to have less health issues than purebred, although some illness's prone to the breed do carry through to mixed dogs. It's really a matter of which you would rather, If you know you want a lab or a lab mix find breeders in your area and talk to them and get a feel for it. You may find one breeder makes you feel more comfortable than the other, or has a better plan when dealing with issues after you bring your puppy home. Just talk it over thoroughly with the breeders and the members of your family and make whichever decision seems would work best for you.

Read the reply below mine and wanted to mention that purebreds are actually more prone to genetic disease, since you have 2 completely different sets of genes mixing together in a mix breed your pup has a 50/50 chance of missing a genetic disorder whereas if it was the same breed and they both had that gene your dog would absolutely 100% get it sicne it would be a dominate gene.

A purebred dog, a well-bred, carefully planned and reared one should always cost more than a mutt. However these days BYBs are naming their price, hanging a fancy (stupid) name on what they are producing, and calling them rare quite often. Sadly there are gullible people out there who believe all this and part with their hard-earned money for something they are told is 'better'. Provided you find a reputable breeder (usually via the relevant Breed Club), go visit and check the place out, see mum with the litter and some adults they have, logic should tell you that this is far more likely to give you a healthy puppy. BYBs don't test, use stock originally rejected from a breeder's breeding programme because of a significant fault or two and so sold as a pet with the intention it should never reproduce. It matters not to a BYB re registration, so even if the dogs concerned are endorsed not for breeding, they just go ahead. If you don't especially want 'a breed', please adopt from a Shelter and DON'T contribute to the income of the BYB.

I have grown up around both Mix Breeds, and Purebreds and honestly can say that there are benefits and costs to both, and that I would have either dogs no matter what!

    Mixed

Pros: A more unique adult look, no two look alike

~A sense of surprise regarding size

~Usually rescues, and they adore you for it

~The POTENTIAL for less health problems (but not always)

Cons: Little predictability in size (can be a problem if you have a pet weight limit)

~Mixed personalities (an uneven blend of the breeds personality)

~Still the potential for health problems.

~Often no background information on the dog, breeds, parents.

    Purebred:

    Pros:Predictability in Size and Appearance

~Know what potential health problems you may be faced with beforehand.

~Can be good personality and easily trained if acquired from a reputable breeder.

    Cons: Breed specific health problems.

~You have to make sure it comes from a Breed specific rescue or a GOOD reputable breeder.

~Similar Appearances can happen across individuals in the breeds.

There are so many pros and cons to both, you just have to decide what is best for you in your life and how you live. And Thank you for rescuing.

Mixed dogs are better. The have less health issues and when bred properly, the dog can have 2 things or a # of things about both breeds that you like. It's really a personal opinion on if you want a pure or mix dog. But whichever one you choose, make it the right one for you! =)

Find out about the mother and father. If either one has been over breed. Or comes from a parent who was over breed. That is what causes a lot of the health issues in dogs. I would go for either one. I've had both pure bread dogs and mutts. None of my dogs have ever had real health problems. Until later in life. Our German Shepard got arthritis when he was about 10. Which is old for a bigger dog.

Me ....Personally I would go with a pure breed dog [if you want the breed standard look] but if you are looking for a certain look { that of a mixed dog], go with a mixed one. If you go to a breeder, make sure they are legit. Most breeders wont hand over papers until you show that they have been fixed. If you get a mixed one, dont get the "designer" pups from the puppy mills, pls go to a shelter & save a life. No pet stores pls!!!!! Best of luck on your new addition!!!

I would buy a pure bred dog.. but honestly it doesnt matter whether its a pure-breed or a mixed... all that really matters is the relationship that u have with each other!!! Trust me.. Breed does not matter AT ALL!!!

But if your looking for a slightly cheaper dog then u should buy a mixed breed as they are much cheaper! But as i said before u should get a dog according to its personality and not breed or quality!!

    It doesnt really matter

If your getting the Pure lab just make sure your going to accredited breeder, if your getting a mix try your best to adopt from a shelter.

    Dont feed the BYB.

    Try going on www.petfinder.com

Let me say, it is great that you want to adopt! When you go on petfinder, type in the breed lab. Take a look! See which dog steals your heart!

Best of Luck in finding your new best friend!

Pure breeds are definitely better. They have a predictable outcome as in size, weight, colour etc and they are probably less likely to get genetic disorders, which are costly to treat in the long run. Plus if you get it from a good breeder, they're not as expensive as some really outrageous 'designer pups'.
