Why do some people say that Catholics are going to hell?

I see that on here from time to time, people saying that their works will lead them to hell. I don't think that is true and it is certainly not loving to say so.

If salvation is through Christ, then all of the extra stuff that people do doesn't matter, right? You can please the church, but you can't please God, only Christ can.

You know Birdie...I was raised a Catholic. And because of my mother's great faith in the Lord I was taught about him through the Catholic faith and in the Catholic ways...and you know Jesus found me and taught me so much more...through the full gospel...he replaced what was incorrect and lead me into his truth. Much to my utter horror I had heard in this protestant churchs (not Catholic) the same views...that Catholics aren't saved...you are right in your thinking and good for you to say so. I second your statement. Many Catholics along with many other denominations will be with Christ! For heaven sakes...the apostles wwere lead to a Roman centrurian who prayed daily in front of an altar to hius unknown God and God saw to it that he was saved. Only God knows what is in a person's heart. And all are invited to salvation. Futhermore, we all sin and fall short of the glory of God. The main reason, Catholics are counted in is because of their faith...Do any of us dare judge?

Catholics are loved no less. Also when you look into the doctrine...the Apostles creed is the doctrine of the Catholic church but it is found in this doctrine the salvation message. I don't agree with the doctrine of putting Mary before the Lord, etc. That is what God replaced in my heart with the truth. Jesus Christ is the only name whereby we shall be saved!

I am not a Catholic today, I am one of Christ's as many of them are too. God bless you Birdie!

The Catholic religion is not the only religion. There are several religions that believe that they have the only right religion; that means that if they are right Catholic's go to hell for not following the supposed right religion.

Wow a lot of people answered fast on this one. Catholics believe that anyone who doesn't follow their beliefs goes to hell so this is just fair.

how the hell are catholics going to hell!? and first of all just so you know from what other people said I am catholic and CATHOLICS DO Not WORSHIP THE Virgin MARY! she is the mother of god! right! she influenced jesus and raised him to be who he was on Earth and it is the same for saints they are like role models and for every non catholic out there just because we have a pope that doesn't mean we agree with what he says like you all who try to skip around to different christan religons and try to find little bitty things wrong with them. and isn't that kind of predjudice that people think we are going to hell? catholics didn't do anything wrong and just because a few catholics did bad things in world history doesn't make everyone bad! don't assume every catholic believes in the exact same thing. that's not true we are human beings too we have a right to have an opinion and I'm Catholic and I'm FOR GAY MARRIGE! I don't agree with every thing the catholic church believes but that doesn't even get close into convincing me to leave the Catholic Church it is the "original" christian religon and it isn't twisted around with false information like the other christian relgions are. but don't take this personally this is to every one out there. Great question though! :]

This is what happens when you get to many religions and a lot of generic ego's together all thinking that they all have the truth and that everybody else is wrong and going to burn in some kind of ridiculous hell. This is all going to end very soon when the Great World Teacher Maitreya comes to help at the creation of a new kind of spirituality that will be compatible with all peoples every where and will as well be tolerant towards all faiths around the world.

Because people (people who aren't Catholic and have never bothered to learn more than the movie version of Catholicism) think that Catholics do/believe the following:

Worship the Virgin Mary (they pray to God and Christ through her, asking her to pray for the souls of the living)

Worship the Saints (again, they pray to God/Christ through them)

Worship Statues (I'm not sure where the morons got this one from)

Can only have a relationship with God through a Priest

There are other things, too, but those are the biggest things I hear from people when they try to teach me about a religion they know little to nothing about.

I fully admit that Catholicism made up a good number of its ideas, but so does every other denomination of Christianity ("The Rapture", anyone?).

Edit: And no, Catholics don't go through being "saved"/"born again". Instead, they go through Confirmation and other things, which requires knowledge of their religion (and, believe it or not, it's not only young kids getting Confirmed). Also, I think the whole "being saved" thing is often a bunch of crap. The people who do it because they truly believe are great, in my book. However, I know sooooo many young people who only chose to get saved because of a peer pressure/group mentality kind of thing.

I have never said that Catholics are going to hell. Whoever said this is not right in the head, they are not God so therefore they can't determine who is a believer and who isn't. However, I do believe that those who don't follow ALL of His commands will only get to heaven by the skin of their teeth, as if they just escaped the flames. They will be seen as the least in the Kingdom of Heaven. Faith without works is dead, you can't just say that you believe and not act upon that belief.

Why does your "question" sound so "troll-ish" to me? I've heard your "question" so many times here on Answers that I've come to seriously doubt the authenticity of it. It seems your "question" always comes from someone conveniently aged 13 and who is "scared" of their possibly going to hell. Now having said that, and as a Roman Catholic of almost 60 years, I can most assuredly tell you that SOME Catholics will go to hell, and some won't. The same is true of Protestants. If you're truly 13 years old, by now you should clearly know we don't "worship Mary", and you should've been told clearly the difference between idolatry and worshiping, and clearly know we don't, and have NEVER worshipped Mary. And you know the "bad things (they) say about the Pope" are lies, born of ignorance and hate. These things you should know because by now you should've received the Sacrament of Confirmation, and all these things you were clearly taught before you received that Sacrament. If you're a troll, you deserve the title, and the discredit. If you're truly 13 and truly have these concerns, you need to go in confidentiality to your Priest and go over these things that you should've learned BEFORE receiving Confirmation. Study again!!!!! God Bless you.

Because Catholic Tradition is "Idolatrous" to Conservative Protestant Christians, as well as to some more moderate Protestants. Though, the feeling is not exclusive to that group. I'm sure there are Liberal Christians somewhere that might feel the same way, and various other religions take a similar stance towards Catholicism.

If you want to see a prime example of a Conservative Protestant stance of Catholicism, check Chick Tracts. Though, from my understanding, this might be a bit too far right even for some conservatives, so don't take it's opinion as representative for all Protestants.

Jesus said "I am the Truth, the Way and the Life, no man goes to the Father except through me"

Catholics go through the Pope & Mary. Not Jesus. So, if we go strictly by the instruction of Jesus, the answer is yes, Catholics are going to hell. We can however, choose to reject what Jesus says there and put our mothers or fathers as the vicar instead. It all depends on whether we are CHRIST-ians or bogus believers.
