Is it blasphemy to take John 3:16 out of context?

John 3:16 is a from a conversation with Nicodemus and is about the Spirit of God (Holy Spirit). That conversation is not about the Crucifixion or blood for sin.

So is it blasphemy to take John 3:16 out of context as it is done, so commonly? (More context is on my biography)

John 3:16 and 17 are together as one paragraph. Both should be read and understood together.

Yes, it is a great error to read into John 3:16 that "God so loved the world that He gave (up for a blood sacrifice unto death) his only begotten Son ..."

The spiritually correct reading of John 3:16 is "For God so loved the world that He gave (as a Divine Living Revelation to this world) his only begotten Son..."

John 3:17 is not "...that the world through him (bleeding and dying as a sacrificial lamb) might be saved."

John 3:17 is "...that the world through (each human following) him might be saved."

There are now at least three or four different accepted atonement doctrines; and they are still evolving. I have talked with many mainline Christian ministers who agree that the atonement doctrine is in error; but they say they don't want to cause discord in their church members by so stating the full truth to all and then losing some members.

There are some good books on the progression of the atonement doctrine by Dr. Stephen Finlan, available in or through most public libraries. Atonement is transforming to Attunement and At-one-ment.

If Jesus did not come to Earth knowing that He was to be the final and perfect sacrifice then His words at the 'last supper' (Passover meal) were in error...not a thing that is even possible for the Son of God.

Remember He said, "...as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed [it], and brake [it], and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body.

    And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave [it] to them, saying, Drink ye all of it;

For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins."

Jesus' own words indicate that His _blood_ is 'shed for many for the remission of sins'.

Just because Jesus was talking with Nicodemus it does not mean that those words were to be held private. He did say that ALL who believe can be saved.

BTW, the Holy Spirit was not given until after His crucifixion and resurrection.

The convo reported in John 3:16 was not about the spirit but about Jesus' crucifixion.

It is certainly blasphemy to deny the antonement power of the blood of Christ.

Hebrews 10:29-31 Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace? For we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. And again, "The LORD will judge His people." It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

As well, it is either dishonesty or blatant ignorance to try to say that the Bible does not teach blood for atonement.

Numbers 35:33 'So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it.

Wait a minute- granted the whole chapter should be put into context however, why do you say that John 3:16 has nothing to do with the sin atonement on the cross. "GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD, THAT HE GAVE HIS ONLY SON, THAT WHOSOEVER BELIEVES ON HIM, SHALL NOT PERISH BUT HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE." The only way to be born again, is through the Blood of Jesus. I think that you need to realize that you may be blaspheming here by saying this chapter has nothing to do with Christ coming to save.

Don't you know that the Holy Spirit did not come until the Pentecost, that's after the Cross and atonement through His blood. You cannot be born again of the Spirit until you have been redeemed through Christ.

The kingdom of God is not meat and drink, but righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit

  • It's not good to take anything out of context. This is done a lot.

No i dont think it is. you are supose to put your own meanings to the bible. Jesus spoke in stories and basicly told us to put them to our lives and for us to determine their meaning. The bible is full of answers, you just have to look to yourself for the interpretation.
