Are we getting a little carried away with Richard Dawkins...?

I mean, I agree with him...but the devotion that we are showing the man is starting to remind me of a different group of people that are pretty fond of a man that may or may not have lived 2000 years ago. Can't even glance in R&S without seeing his name (oops, perhaps this post isn't helping us get him out of our collective consciousness). I think we need to at least give credit to some of our other friends (Sam Harris, Bertrand Russel, oh and especially Mark Twain). Do we need to quit the Dawkins worship or is he worthy of our worship?

Update:

I agree with you Tricia,Boris, and others...I know he is not actually worshipped. It was just a tongue and cheek comment that was born out of the frustration of seeing him referenced 4 or 5 times in a 10 minute span!

That's just it, I don't worship Dawkins. He's a brilliant man and evolutionary biologist.

I like the greek philosopher Epicurus.

  • I don't think there is the kind of "worship" you are alluding to. I would be more likely to think of Chris Hitchens when thinking of a "celebrity" atheist before Dawkins. And also, there are a LOT of atheists that don't like Dawkins, so no, there is no correlation with the 2000 year old story you are referring.

Most of the references for Dawkins I see on here are from Theists.

Find me an answer where an Atheist quoted Dawkins to make a point. Then compare that to the number of times a Theist has quoted the bible on here. Youl will have your answer.

    I'm not.

What little I've read by him have been snippets. He writes intelligently.

Plenty of people have gained an aura of popularity in their own times. that doesn't make them messiahs or the like. Jerry Lee Lewis, for instance, was at one point at least as popular as Elvis. Didn't last.

someone can be popular without being worshipped.

    Groupies do groupy things.

    Children do childish things.

Devout Jews got carried away with baby-lon is fallen, x2.

Barnabas got carried away with dissimulation at Antioch.

Carnal Corinthians got carried away with Apolos and Cephas.

Some xian people get carried away with literalism and legalism.

Some xian people get carried away with Jesus' division, not peace.

Atheists also seem to get carried away with Dawkins and Hawkins.

When I became a man, I put away childish things (laws).

Dawkins doesn't get mentioned here that much. I'm an atheist but I haven't even read a single article by him.

I am in no way devoted to him. Believe me.

I am my own person with my own opinions. I disagree with Dawkins on a few things.

Richard Dawkins is not a religion.

No, we're not. He happens to be the premier apologist for the atheist viewpoint, but he's certainly not worshiped.

Good cooks revere Betty Crocker, but you don't see them worshipping her. (Though, like god, she IS an imaginary character!)

Don't know about you, but I'm not devoted to him LOL, reading the God Delusion does not make me devoted...
