Reason behind the name - horrible or witty?

Dolores Joy - for a couple that only wanted boys and no daughters.

This is a hypothetical situation. We're not interested in opinions about the names themselves OR why it's great to have daughters, just the reason for that particular combination. We've been arguing about whether or not that is a truly awful reason to name a girl that or if it's witty - and she's never told why.

Update:

Yes, because of the sorrow - joy thing. You guys proved me right! My husband said no one would get it! Thanks for all the great answers so far!

Sorrow and Joy? A bit of a contradiction!

Well, I get it - Sorrow and Joy, and they are both pretty names (though I probably couldn't name my own daughter Dolores!), but I think it might be emotionally scarring to the girl to know why she was named that.

She will eventually develop the brain capacity to figure it out, don't you think? After all she won't stay a child and then can put two and two together. Both are ok names, not my favorite but ok. As for the reason I think it's odd you would want to even make a point of giving her a name that stresses your pain mixed with joy at her arrival. Kinda ambivalent. Hope you can love her unconditionally at least.

  • Dolor like pain in spanish? I'm a bit confused.

    Pain is joy?
