How do I train my cat to use the litter box properly?

I have newly acquired a 15 month old cat from the RSPCA (Animal Welfare). He is a lovely fellow, spayed and micro-chipped and already seems to know what to do with his litter-box. However this morning (day 2) he seems to have this Schrödinger's cat poop thing happening - that is to say, he's done 2 IN the box and 1 OUT of the box (just on the edge) overnight.

Any suggestions as to how I encourage him to keep it all INSIDE the box or do I have to wake up overnight to clean his litter-box out? I'm sure he'd be pleased to have me trained to do THAT, but I'm not so keen on having my sleep interrupted!

Update:

Well, he pretty much knows how to use the litter box. On Day 1 he used it well enough (about 5 times) and I clean it out each time I find it soiled and cleaned it out before going to bed.

I got a good sized box, about 1.5 ft by 2.5 ft in size and it looks deep enough, I'd have thought.

I bought the kitty litter from the RSPCA; cellulose stuff made from recycled paper. I don't know if it's a clumping litter, though. I guess I'll try that and maybe get a bigger box.

Update 2:

Oh yeah, and when he goes to cover his poop he's not so good at that. He seems to prefer to get out of the box and scrape the tiled floor like he KNOWS what he's supposed to do, but not actually doing it.

This could be happening for a number of reasons.

    1. He may not be quite used to his new surroundings and has a little anxiety.

    2. He may be a 'neat freak' - many cats are and you have to change their boxes daily, sometimes twice a day.

    3. He may not like the liter and is only tolerating it.

    Suggestions:

However many cats you have, you need to have two boxes. For example, you have one cat, so have two boxes in two different areas. If you have two cats, have four boxes, etc. This will help in the following ways: The cat has options, you won't have to clean the 'one and only' box as much and it will allow you to experiment it a bit to find out if the cat does not care for the liter.

A cat does not really have to be trained, it is instinct but what you can do, is do positive reinforcement. As soon as you see him use the bathroom in the box properly, have a treat immediately on hand and say 'good kitty!' and pet him. This may help as far as him understanding that you really like it when he does it in the box.

    Good luck.

He might not like the litter, Is he standing at the very edge of the pan and then going so that it falls right next to the pan? If that's the case he most likely doesn't like the scent or texture of the litter, unscented clumping litter works best....on that note, cats will not use a dirty litter box and if they do using a mildly soiled box it will be on the edge like I said before. If you cahnge the litter and lcean the box and he is still doing it try getting a bigger box. At 15 months a normal cat will already know how to use the litter box but if he does typically depends on if he likes his litter box, I read in a book my vet gave me that the majority of litter box problems are ether because they don't like the litter or the size of the box or they have an infection like urnie track, ect so I'd say try cleaning the box and switching the litter an then if that doesn't work try a bigger box and if all else fails I think you might need to go to the vet. Hope I helped.

Accidents do happen, especially with newly acquired kittens or cats. Sometimes it's mere distraction in a new environment to still learning boundaries of using the litter or just the rim of the pan, even cats will lay a lazy business if their minds arn't focused on the job. Many pet stores carry cat-litter attraction sprays. When he misses put it in the box & make a show of it without scolding, might be all it takes. When your home put him in the box a half hour after he eats & give praise whether he goes or not....it reinforces where the toilet is while his belly's full. Good Luck

Some cats do have a problem getting it all in the box. Perhaps the box is too small?

You could try a covered box, but you must clean it out more often so smells don't accumulate inside and put the cat off even more.

My cat did this at first also. When he was going, he didn't realize that his butt wasn't exactly inside the box. The best thing to do is to get a top for the litter box so these accidents don't occur any longer.

  • Okay, well it's a responsibility, so it's normal for your "sleep" to be interrupted. The best way in my opinion is to maybe reward your cat after it uses its litterbox (give it a snack) and maybe show it where it is and place your cat in it until it gets the hang of it. It may take some patience, but sooner or later, your cat will know to use its litterbox.

I think you should just be patient with the cat because when you get them they have to get used to their surroundings. Your lucky the cat even went in the litter box!

my cat had that problem and we were told to mix some cat nip in his litter box and mix it all around. but it cant be in a little pile where he can eat it. the cat nip makes the cat attracted to the litter box so once you do that and put your cat by it he should use it. thats what my cat did but he is older. well i hope it works out for you.

Just pick up the poop and put it in the litter box.

Eventually he will get the hang of it.

He probably just likes it clean though, so if you clean it before you go to bed, you will probably wake up without any problems. :D

    hi,

i used to have acat long time ago...i trained him for 1st time as i wasn't successfully.he poo on the bed, under the table everywhere...bit nite mare.then i tried my mum's tips..show him the litter box/container whichever you preferoval, square etc.then show him a candle with light on n tell him if he doesn't want to poo there..you might hurt him..advice him properly, seem hard to teach but later on he might pick up.

mine well trained just one advice then he followed n no more mess and smells.try it now and good luck!!!!
