Is It Considered Tyranny That Congress Demands That The Big 3 Auto Makers Build Hybrids and Electric Vehicles?

Hybrids and Electric are not in high demand. People still want their big SUV's and Congress is telling the Big 3, NO! Isn't it our decision here in this free country to choose what we want to drive? Is it not TYRANNY to DICTATE through Legislation what the American People need to drive?

TYRANNY

1: oppressive power Thomas Jefferson> ; especially : oppressive power exerted by government

OPPRESSIVE

1 : unreasonably burdensome or severe <oppressive legislation>

When any government extends it self past the parameters of the intent of it's own Constitution whether pacifically or forcefully, it is Tyrannical.

We have come so far beyond the original intent of the federal government one has to ponder how much longer will the small amount of freedoms we still will exist in just 10 years.

The ironic part to this entire social experiment we are practicing at the moment is at the hands of that generation of free willed free love free thinking hippie types that swore to never trust anyone over thirty because it was there where authority and authoritarianism lived.

All 3 of them already build hybrids. Chevy Tahoe Hybrid, Chevy Malibu Hybrid, Chevy Silverado Hybrid, Saturn Vue Hybrid, Saturn Aura Hybrid, Cadillac Esclade Hybrid, Ford Escape Hybrid, Mercury Mariner Hybrid, Dodge Durango Hybrid. Nobody builds an affordable electric car because nobody makes a good enough battery yet that is affordable. They already build fuel efficient cars. Chevy Cobalt 25/37, Pontiac G5 25/37, Ford Focus 24/25, Pontiac G6 22/33, Chevy Malibu 22/33, Saturn Aura 22/33, Chevy Impala 19/29, Ford Taurus 18/28, Chevy Silverado 15/21, Ford F150 15/21

I guess if you are going hat in hand to ask for a loan to save the American economy, you should expect to have some strings attached (unlike the AIG fiasco).

The reason the Big 3 were so heavy into the suvs is because that is what was selling last year before the gas mess and they were profitable doing it.

Hopefully the hybrids will come down in price and we all will benefit by them using less gasoline from the foreign countries that hate us so much. peace

It's Tyranny by proxy yes! The argument can be made that they do not have to accept the bailout (...bailout...talk about tyranny!!!) but if they do not accept it, Americans are out of jobs and we would have to import vehicles to meet the demands of government. This and the fact that Paulson used the Wall street money to buy stocks in financial institutions should frighten everyone at the level of control that governement is taking just now.

    Yes and no.

If the Big 3 are going to take government funds to stay afloat, then the government can have some say in how they conduct their business.

If a car company is running on its own, without government funding I am against the government being able to tell them how to run their business. That said the government is there to protect us from others. The destruction of the common environment can be seen as a threat to each of us, and as such regulations regarding the environmental impact of a product seems reasonable.

Tyranny is when your government goes to war w/out a declaration, a complete disregard of Constitutional Law.

Nope. No one is forcing them to take the money.

And I don't remember voting for the mandatory conversion to DTV. I mean, can you imagine if they got rid of AM with the adoption of FM radio?

garsh, since the big 3 are asking congress for billions I 'spose congess can dictate what it wants. Obviously, what they're making isn't selling, is it now?

Nobody is forcing anyone. It is the need of the hour! Nobody will force you to breathe either when there is not enough breathable air!

er... FIRST... if everyone wanted to drive SUVs... THEY WOULD BE BUYING THEM AND THE BIG 3 WOULDN'T NEED TO ASK FOR MONEY... CHECK OUT THEIR SALES... YOU SEEM TO BE EXTREMELY WRONG...

second... they are not forcing the companies to do anything... they are merely saying... if you want this money, you have to do it...

the loaner sets the demands in a desperate market...
