Cat "spraying"? What is the stuff and how to get her to stop it?

My daughter's cat is almost 16. She has been a great cat but recently has started "spraying" this stank yellowish liquid. Only in her litter box which I guess I should be thankful for, but even through 4 different types of boxes and liners it still comes out onto the floor. The latest box is this crazy expensive thing that is like a globe and she has to walk up a ramp then crawl inside it to use it. She sprays over the little barrier wall, onto the ramp which collects on the floor.

My question is, what the heck is this "spray" and how do I get her to stop????

This is a female cat who was "fixed" at 6 months old.

Update:

The cat is the only animal in the house, has never been outside, there are no other cats - that I see - around the house, and she sleeps on the couch never even looks out a window. She has been perfect for 15 and 1/2 years. If this doesn't stop the cat may have to go.

She is not spraying, she is urinating. Unless she is urinating in inappropriate areas ie carpet, clothes etc, then she's fine. If this is a new box and its awkward, that could be the reason. She's also old, and may be arthriti, it may be difficult for her.

"Spraying" is done on a vertical surface like a wall. It is URINE! If hers in dark and has a foul odor, she may have a serious problem. Old cats VERY often have kidney disease, you should have her checked.

It doesn't sound like she's doing anything wrong

My cat started doing that when we had a few more cats added to our family. I think it's a territorial thing, but if you don't have any other cats I really don't know why yours is doing it, unless she's recently been outside and has been "reminded" that there are other cats in the world that might be after what she thinks is hers.

And, as for your question of what it is, it's just urine.

she may have an infection or a disorder in her bladder since she is so old.

she could be stressed as well.

i didnt think female cats sprayed i thought male cats did that.

i would take her to the vets and tell them what is going on with her.

Is the cat fix? If you have them fix, they will still spray after being fixed, but with no Scent

Also senior cat tend to having bowel movement, a quick visit to the vet will help.
