How far do you drive to work every day? Am I driving too far?

After all this searching and trying and praying, I'm hopefully about to get a good job! The thing is, it's a county over. It's roughly 30 miles one way on the interstate... but the good thing is that I'll be leaving town, rather than driving into town, so I'll miss that traffic. Is this too far to drive for an average-paying county job? How far do you drive?

I go 20 miles each way, half on the 405 in Orange County.

30 miles is a common commute here in LA.

Last year I drove 50 miles each way, 100 miles total so it was a little over an hour each way. It really sucked especially when you had early duty and had to be there at 6:30 in the morning. Not to mention filling up the gas tank twice a week. This year I am at a school much closer. It still takes about 30 minutes but that is in heavy traffic, which the road I travel always has. If I had no traffic I could probably make it in 20 minutes.

It all depends on you. If it's a fantastic job, and you can't find anything else, then maybe. It also depends on if you enjoy driving. I don't know where you live, but 30 miles could easily be an hour each way, which works out to 10 hours a week or the equivalent of a 25% job. But if you have to, you have to.

I drive 63 miles one way primarily on a two lane country road. I live at the coast and work in Oregon's Willamette Valley. It's a little bit nuts but I've lived at the coast for 31 years. Fortunately I have a car that gets between 45-52 mpg (2003 VW Jetta TDI).

30 miles for me is just way too far. I suggest you quantify your data to have an objective analysis. What is your average travel time in driving to work and in coming back home? If you are earning $10/hr and spend an hour driving to work and another hour coming home, that's $20/day had you spent the time working. How much will you spend commuting instead? - Normally, it's much less expensive commuting. You dont get to enjoy the comfort of your car but you save on fuel and maintenance cost, you are more relaxed when you get home (not exhausted from driving), and you avoid the hazards and risks involved in driving.

    I hope this helps.

I commute about 33 miles a day to work. Here in southern California that's a pretty common thing. I think as long as you think it's worth it then it doesn't really matter. Especially because you'll be going against traffic !
