The easiest way to introduce cats to a dog?

We have had the dog (mastiff/coon hound mix) since she was a puppy, now 31/2 years old. We just got a 7 month old and year old cat. We have kept them apart so far but we want to have them share the house.

What we did was take a dog toy and give it to the cat in a separate room. Then give the dog a cat toy in the other room. (Let them sniff each other under the doorway to get to know each other and see how they react) It may take awhile but eventually they should get along. After separating them for a day, we introduced them. Make sure you have help to make sure all goes well. Let them smell each other and see how they react. Just be aware that the cats might gang up on your dog because there are two of them. Does your dog have a good temperament? What is her behavior like? If she is a layed back dog, she should be fine. If she is hyper, watch her so she wont scare the new cats. It took ours 5 days to finally get along, but now they play together all the time. I have a Beagle.

We had no problem introducing a puppy to our adult cat way back when I go her. The cat may not have as much of a problem adapting to the puppy because it ISN'T a cat. He will more than likely run from the puppy than stalk it. Just don't let the puppy terrorize the cats. The cats (if they have their claws) will teach the puppy manners. This is the best way. He will learn that if he puts his nose where it doesn't belong it will get swatted. Our dog leaves the cats completely alone (both dogs) unless the cat is scratching the couch and we say "get the bad cat" then they will lunge (not making contact) and bark once or twice, making the cat stop. We don't tell them to scare the cat unless the cat is being naughty, like beating up the kitten. Otherwise, they all totally ignore each other.

Never leave them without supervision until you know for sure there won’t be any trouble. We started by crating the dog and letting the cat approach him and smell him. We got a lot of suggestions from the internet and were really helpful. During the first 3 weeks the cat was afraid because my dog is big and full of energy but after a month or so they learned to get along and now they even take naps together. It does take time and patience.

Get a pet gate, at least it'll keep the dog out of one room where the cat can have peace and safety. The cat can go over it easily, the dog would be stopped.

Google online for info, use the words "introducing dog to cat" there's excellent info out there. Too much to type here.

I would first introduce their senses to each other without them actually seeing each other.

like, if the dog lays on the blanket , let the cat sniff it and see how it reacts

just what i would do first! hope it works out!

lock em both in a room. if the dog dominates the cat then tha cat should not be around but if you open the room and you see the cat with it's claws in the dog then submission has occured and it is safe to keep both together.

    for me it was opposite,

we have a 7year old indoor cat that never seen a dog before,

    and we got a puppy

    never force them together

let them go to eahcother naturally

    never force it

put them in the same room and if it does work out you just have to deal with them being separated.
