How do I get my cat to not escape from the back yard?

He’s a 1 year old Ragdoll/Persian mix, we let him outside in the patio and until this weekend he had never attempted to escape the back before, earlier Saturday I found him walking on top of the brick wall, I grabbed him off and put him inside, later on that day I went out to get him and he was gone, luckily my neighbor spotted him and I was able to grab him and bring him back in, he jumped from the chairs, to the table, to the wall, we don’t know what to do because we moved the table as far back as possible and he still got out, has anyone also had this problem? And if so, how did you fix it? What are some ways for me to fix this?

My fiancé said to lean the chairs into the table but I’m afraid he’ll just leap over them and onto the table again, some cats can jump as far as 15 feet… We’ve tried not letting him outside but it’s not possible, if we don’t let him out he will howl for hours on end until we open the door, or if we ignore it, the SECOND we open the door he darts out like the place is on fire. He just sits in the back plotting on how to escape, he won’t do it with us outside, only when we go in. We don’t want to be cruel and hit him or spray him with water because it will do no good and it’s mean!

What else can we do? We live in apartments so I don’t think we can put additional material at the top of the wall to keep him from jumping over, please help!!

Update:

Just a side note, he IS neutered but all that means is he doesn’t meow when he’s outside, he just tries to escape! He MAY come back but the problem is that he has no way back IN the patio without us opening the gate and we may have no idea when he’s back or not… there isn’t a pet door even if he COULD jump back over the wall, which I’m pretty sure he can’t, he has to jump on the table to get over in the first place from the outside there’s a big bush in front of the wall so he can’t jump over that I’m positive.

Are there any tips for making him stay inside? We’ve tried but he just howls and howls and howls at the door until we open it, we thought it was just to be outside, but now that he knows he can get it, that’s the only reason he wants out anymore and we don’t want to lose him!!

Update 2:

One more question, is it cruel to leash im to our patio table? We would use a harness so he couldn't choke himself, and we would leave it long enough to get around but not long enough to go over or on top of the wall, could that be used as an option?

Would you be allowed to put up a Purrfect Fence in front of the wall? It can hardly be seen at all as it is made of mesh but it is unscaleable by cats. It's easy to erect, I put one up myself in one day.

Or inward angled brackets attached to the wall with mesh netting across them.

There are some pictures on this site that might give you some ideas.

Wow, your in quite a difficult situation. Is there a busy road around you that could hurt him? If he escapes, are you sure he wouldn't come back? If he jumps over the wall, chances are, he will come back. Has he been neutered? Maybe this could also be one of the causes for him to want to go out and explore some more.

The only way I can think of beating this problem, is for you to relocate somewhere else, that way you can let him out without worrying or pass him onto a friend or member of your family for a bit, so he can go out, without you having to worry. You can't really make the wall any higher, unless you put bricks and stones on top of it, which would be really weird. Maybe you could try asking the people that are responsible for the apartment if you could add additional material.

If your that worried, I guess your going to have to keep him in and he is a house cat, so why he is so desperate to get out confuses me. Was he let out from an early age? I have four house cats and none of them want to go outside and if they did, I wouldn't let them, for there is a busy road outside and I love them too much, I'd be worried if they ran off or if something happened to them.

Try enriching his environment. Maybe buy him some new toys or things to keep him entertained, try spending more time with him. If it gets worse, go and see your local vet and see if they could help in any way. Lots of luck, this must be really hard for you as his owner, as you only want the best for you cat, I hope it works out.

    You have 3 choices:

    1. Train to a harness/leash and take him outside for awhile.

    2. Build/buy a cat enclosure (like an enclosed in tent, cage); or

    3. Keep him inside all the time. Cats do NOT have to go outside.

She could of mated with a number of cats including the one that followed her home. And she can still be in heat. Take her to your vet - he/she should be able to answer all your questions and tell you when you can get her spayed.

I would give the cat lots of care and feed it a lot of food so it will love you and not run away!

If you Google "Outdoor cat enclosure" you will find lots of options. I put a link to one below. Hope that helps.
