Probably a dumb hunting question about what to wear?

I know ZERO about hunting. Never been hunting. Never shot a gun.

My husband used to hunt years ago, and recently decided to start again now that we have some friends that hunt.

He has an upcoming birthday, and I would like to get him some clothing for hunting, but I have no idea what "color" to get!! I thought wearing orange was smart and required, but at Gander Mtn., most everything is like a "field camo" type pattern. Why do you want to blend in?? Isn't that unsafe??

Sorry, I just have no clue and could use some help!!!!! Thanks.

We live in NY state if that helps any.

There is no such thing as a "dumb question", only a "dumb" answer!

There are different types of "camo" patterns for hunting different kinds of terrain. Will you be hunting for waterfowl? if so, something with cattails or marsh grass patterns work great. For hunting the south for large game, real tree camo is hard to beat, For hunting dense pine or brush covered areas, I made do for many years with standard issue GI camo.

As for wearing orange, YES!!! I was not a big advocate of wearing blaze, (in my state it ws not required). Without going into details, I learned a hard and painful lesson, and never go hunt without blaze orange in camo pattern on my hat, and a large blaze orange camo over vest that goes over whatever else I am wearing. The only animal I have ever seen spook at blaze orange was antelope. Deer, elk, moose, black bear, none seem to even see it. But another hunter can see it miles away!

I own a jacket that I have had for years, on one side it has a gree real tree pattern, and if you turn it inside out, it has a water fowl type camo on it. It covers most needs. If in doubt, you can always get him a gift card and explain what you want him to pick out for himself.

Sounds like your husband is as lucky as I am in finding a great wife who shares the outdoors with him.

A lot of folks wear camo gear and have a vest and/or hat that's orange or orange camo. The camo is more to break up your image to the game. You're more noticeable if you are in solid colors because you end up a block of the same shade of grey to their eyes. That being said you do want to try and pick camo that resembles the terrain you're hunting. Obviously a marsh reed pattern isn't so great in the hardwood forest in early fall ... or mid winter with the snow all over.

  • u should look in to getting a bright colored vest as well as suitable clothes depending the time of ye r he going 2 be going to b e u can look in 2 is whats called a tree stand its a thing that's placed in a tree 4 the hunter 2 sit an operated till what they are hunting 4 comes in 2 v view even get him a car-ring case 4 his shot gun they also have vests that hunters wear that he can place extra shells in the place provided 4 the shells i would also suggest getting a very very loud whistle cause out in the woods there are hazard's such as holes and have him always carry a cell phone even if its a pre paid cell no matter who makes it in the vest there are pockets he can put little things-whistle cell phone in case he should fall he can alert others 2 his where abouts the things out in the woods is safety 1st and fore most orange vest is so others can see him from a distance and hes not mistaken for a deer or what ever they are hun ting 4 safety 1st good luck in what u choose 2 ger him please get back with me if u can 2 know what u choose and how he likes what u got 4 him thank thanks

A lot depends on what type of hunting you're husband is participating in. Waterfowling would require rain gear in marsh camo patterns, while blaze orange is required/recommended for gun deer hunting in most states. Soft quiet camo would be the best for bowhunting deer. Your best bet is to ask your hubby what he would use. Kinda spoils the surprise a little but it's better than buying something that will just hang in the closet.

If you are going to buy camo, I would suggest Realtree AP. It is a type of camo that blends in with almost all surroundings. I don't specifically know the laws in NY however. If necessary, an orange hat and vest can be worn. Check the laws first just to be sure!

How about just getting him a gift card for Gander Mtn.

This way he could pick out his own clothing and try them on.

He could maybe even wait a little longer to shop and the hunting cloths will probably be on clearance soon. So a $50 gift card could actually get him closer to $100 worth of new hunting cloths.

You could also go to cabelas.com and go into there "Bargain Cave" and get some good deals. You can get Gift Cards right over the internet also.

    Good Luck!!

P.S. I think it's GREAT that you're supporting his new hobby! Allot of wives I know wouldn't be so good about it!!

Well if you hunt with a gun it is unsafe to blend in too much, but if you hunt Archery you should wear only camo the animals are less jumpy in Archery season, so I'm not completely sure why you wear only camo, but you do.

Source(s): My family hunts Archery, but I am planning on hunting Modern-Fire-Arm.

Deer / caribou / moose etc. have poor vision, and they are color blind. Hunters wear blaze orange for safety -- deer won't see you, but other hunters will (hopefully).

Fowl have better vision and would shy away from bright orange, so bird hunters wear field camo. Fowl hunters typically shoot upwards, and they shoot pellets (as opposed to slugs/bullets) so other hunters can feel a bit more comfortable around each other without the bright orange.

If he's hunting bird, a duck call, turkey call etc. also makes a nice gift. Best hunting gift I ever got ... a good pair of insulated, waterproof boots.

It really depends on what sort of hunting is planned. Camoflage is nice in some circumstances, orange is only required/desired in a few circumstances, and simple khaki and other plain earth tones are fine in other circumstances. It might be best for you to go to a store that specializes in such things so you can pick the brains of the sales staff, though in some cities that's somewhat like the blind leading the blind.

collectively as each and all and sundry of those exhibits are low point and much less intense priced, in my adventure exhibitors truly gown formally. i do no longer unavoidably propose the main costly of each thing, yet they do positioned on perfect coach dresses, truly than education dresses. you will choose tall boots, a hunt coat & shirt, gloves, etc. until eventually the coach is unique as a education coach, you choose finished coach dresses; a polo & chaps would not be suited. The decide might make an allowance if the day is amazingly warm and wave hunt coats, yet even then, maximum will nonetheless positioned on them. for many exhibitors, the purpose of those exhibits is to simulate and prepare for larger stages of exhibiting, so as that they do generally guard a definite point of turnout expectancies. you have the potential to break out with an casual look at a barn coach, yet county truthful & open exhibits frequently do require perfect dresses. you do no longer could be on the top of coach ring couture, yet you do could be suitable became out.
