Is it normal to be exhausted at the beginning of a diet?

Not a diet so much as a "whole life change."

I recently started a nutrition/weight loss/exercise program. For the first week, I'm on a balanced 1000 calorie a day limit.

Each afternoon I "power walk" (keeping my heart rate up) two and a half miles, part of which is 200 steps up a tall hill. I am absolutely exhausted when I get back and for the rest of the evening ... not just tired, but "don't even want to stand up" exhausted. I find I am tired in the mornings too. (Not severely though.)

I am a male, 270, and would like to lose 70 pounds. The whole thing is working beautifully and the weight is coming off. I'm just wondering about the tired thing.

(I should have mentioned - the second week, I go up to 1800 calories per day on the program.)

    1000 calories is not enough for an adult, or even a child, especially if you are adding a new exercise component to your life. I know it's tempting to restrict calories to make the weight come off faster, but soon you won't have the energy to do the exercise, and that's the KEY to weight loss. Eat healthfully, but MORE...you need plenty of protein to help build the muscle that will burn off the fat you want to lose. Additionally, very low calorie diets ALWAYS backfire, in that the body is convinced that starvation is imminent, and so zealously retains every bit os what is not burned. When you increase caloric intake, even slightly, your metabolism is WAY slower than it was before, and the weight packs on. Please consider eating more calories/volume of healthy foods. Good luck--you are doing a great and difficult thing! Don't give up; and don't rely on Y!A for advice (except mine, of course!)

    Hi Dear

    The fact that you have 1000 calories leaves you no Energy to Exercise.

    You should have at least twice the amount of calories. This would be Healthier way to go about a weight loss Program

    You aren't getting enough calories. 1500 to 2000 cal a day should be your target. Too few calories and your body will go into starvation mode and hold on to that fat for dear life. Also, if you don't eat enough calories you will end up losing muscle instead of fat.

    Fat cells are full of toxins and it does cause one to feel lethargic or exhausted when your fat cells melt and the toxins start to recirculate into the blood stream.

    A really good antioxidant does help one get back on track as well as a food form multiple for B vitamins to help with blood sugar.
