A meniscestomy is fairly standard surgery. The problem is there are certain questions that you have to ask yourself before getting it done. How old are you, this is asked for if you are young and very active this procedure is going to potentially cause you problems. Does the knee lock or give out? If no then one has to think long and hard about this as taking out a piece of meniscus exposes the cartilage underneath to wear and erosion that would not normally happen leading to the need for a total knee replacement far more early than one would expect. Are you a runner or participant in sports that have running and jumping involved in them? If yes are you willing to give them up to preserve the knee? If not then have the procedure done realizing that erosion of the knee is going to take place. Are you overweight? If you are then lose the weight as this will help your knee. The latest studies show that taking the meniscus out leads to the need to have a premature total knee replacement. Talk this over with your doctor and ask what they think about that. Get in with a physical therapist before you have the procedure for it will help the knee significantly whether the procedure is done or not.

I had this done when I was in my 20's. That was 30 years ago. I recovered very quickly and didn't need any kind of therapy. My knee was also back to 100% I think because you are so young and very active you should have a quick recovery. Good Luck!

Yes, I had it done. Recover 4 - 6 weeks, possibly. Back to normal?? Depends on if they take a piece of the meniscus out. There is no replacement for it, better chance of bone on bone rubbing and arthritis setting in. If they leave the meniscus in and don't remove it, possibility the joint will lock up. Talk to your doctor about all your options.
