why do some women think that Plan B is an abortion pill?

even though its a morning after pill (emergency contraceptive), which prevents pregnancy. even the plan B website says that it isn't an abortion pill and does not terminate an existing pregnancy. it also says that emergency contraception prevents future surgical abortions and if we want to reduce the number of abortions we would all get behind Plan B, whether it prevents implantation or not. so woman who are against emergency contraception is this some kind of religious belief or what?

Update:

courtney G: you never know when an accident happens. unplanned pregnancies happen everyday. so what makes you think that a person unwilling to go through pregnancy, is going to take responsibility. would you say the same thing about a raped woman?

Update 2:

luvinchr: you're right. good point

Update 3:

pinktulip: you answered my question very nicely but i think its subjective to say that people who support plan b doesn't think that life begins at conception. i think that life begins at conception and i know many Christians who does also and agrees that plan b isn't abortion

Update 4:

cait: excellent answer

Okay, first of all.....you know those annoying people who picket abortion clinics....yeah...I'm one of them. I have done a ton of research, not to mention written research papers on abortion. I'm going to explain this in laymans terms:

The morning after pill reacts with a womans ovarian cycle by making you menstrate immediately, rather than wait for your normal menstration. Therefore, your body is flushed of its liquid membrane (what we see as blood flow) to sustain a fertilized egg. Therefore, the sperm not only likely won't ever have time to reach the egg. But even if it does, it is flushed out too quickly for the cell to split, thus starting conception. Chances are, unless you happen to be ovulating (about three days when your egg is traveling in the part most likely to be reached by sperm, the egg and sperm will never come into contact with one another. I tell critics of the morning after pill that if they are concerned that using it is abortion, then they must believe that every male who masturbates just performed abortion on his millions of sperm.

Furthermore, it isn't until nine days after conception (when the sperm meets the egg) that the cell begins to take on individual, unique, properties. During this ninth day, the female body sees the now fetus as a FOREIGN object and literally attacks the fetus. The fetus sends out a special hormone to tell the female's attacking cells that it is "good." The hormone that the fetus excretes on the ninth day is the same hormone that a pregnancy tests to identify whether or not a woman is pregnant.

To get to my point, if the process dexscribed in the paragraph above has already taken place, then a woman's uterus will not react with the morning after pill. The morning after pill only works prior to the events described above, as it cannot manipulate the hormonal interaction that takes place nine days afte conception.

People who oppose the morning after pill because they think it is abortion are simply ignorant of the facts. If I wasn't so passionate about pro-life, I would be one of those people.....so it isn't their fault, just an ignorant opinion.

HOWEVER, there are many reasons that you shouldn't take the morning after pill, as I have had friends that have suffered terrible side effects (hospitalization) due to the risks.

Weigh your options, every body is different. I hope this helps!

First of all, let's define what an abortion is. The best definition I've found so far is "the termination of a pregnancy." Technically miscarriages are spontaneous abortions, so this covers our bases. Keep that definition in mind. There are two things Plan B does: 1. Delays the release of a woman's egg. 2. If the egg is already released, makes the union of sperm and egg more difficult, by thickening cervical mucous. Plan B has no effect, whether good or bad, on an already-established pregnancy. If the egg is implanted, then taking Plan B is just like taking a sugar pill. There have been extensive tests done on this, so don't believe women who say "it kills the pregnancy"! It does not. Pregnancy is defined as "the period from conception to birth when a woman carries a developing fetus in her uterus." Note that conception has only occurred when a fertilized egg has implanted in the walls of the uterus. Anyone who tries to tell you otherwise is either stupid or ignorant. After all, do we say that a woman who goes in for in vitro fertilization is pregnant if her eggs don't implant? No, we don't. Because she isn't. So, they call it the abortion pill because they are ignorant. There is no other explanation, frankly. Sorry, ladies. I'm sure you're wonderful women, but if you think Plan B is an abortion then you need to go educate yourselves.

I have always wondered the same thing. I am completely against abortion in almost every instance but I am also completely for Plan B. It is not in any way shape or form abortion. I am religious (although not Catholic) and I know people with my same religious beliefs that are against it too. I think the major problem is one of ignorance. There are educated, adults that really have no clue what Plan B really is. I think the honestly believe that it is a very early abortion, which it clearly is not.

So if you find a better answer then I would love to know. Because it baffles me too.

I am glad you asked this, but I am very disappointed in some of the responses you have gotten. Many women DO believe that Plan B is a form of abortion, because, well, it kind of is. Yes, it does state that it will not affect an egg that has "already been fertilized and implanted in the uterus." But did you read that carefully? It will not destroy an egg that is IMPLANTED in the uterus. However, it can destroy an egg that has been fertilized PRIOR to implantation. And many people believe that life begins at conception, not implantation, and therefore this is abortion to them. Most Christians believe that life begins at conception, and these people do not support Plan B because of this.

It is not a religious debate, it is about when you believe that life begins. I believe it begins at conception, and therefore I do not support Plan B. People who do not believe that a fertilized egg is a life form until it has implanted itself into the lining of the uterus support Plan B.

I personally think Plan B is an awesome thing, although i don't think it should be used all the time tho, I know there was a girl on here the other day asking about symptoms with it and asking if she was taking them at the wrong time basically taking them everytime she had sex, I have taken the pill once and i do not believe in abortion at all unless under certain circumstances obviously.

People are not informed properly is all it boils down to..Plan B is nothing like getting an abortion (even though I am pro choice and find those people who pickett clinics wretched human beings)..all plan b is a way to stop the sperm from getting to the egg..it is just like birth control, kind of..

(also in my opinion pro lifers should not use any form of birth control and should not take plan b, because they think all life is precious, well I would hate to see them prevent anything..HA!)

I only support abortion to an extent but I have no issues with plan B. However, I do not think that it should be used to give teenage girls and excuse to continue to have unprotected sex. If teenagers are determined to have sex then they should looking into getting on birth control or using condoms. Otherwise, there is nothing morally wrong with plan b that I can see. =)

They are ignorant of medicine and science.

Plan B keeps the blastocyst from implanting, so it does not split and grow into a fetus.

It's not an abortion, it's not even a fetus.

The same blastocyst could be flushed out with your menses if it did not implant and you didn't take the pill, so I guess having your period is an abortion too?

    People are STUPID.

Yes, partly religious but mostly it's just a problem with women having no personal responsibility.

Source(s): I am not catholic and I DO use birth control but am personally against morning after pills because if you have unprotected sex, that is your decision and you should live with the consequences.

Yes. Some Catholics, (like my mother) believe that it's wrong to use the morning after pill. I think that it's just based on opinion. I personally don't think that there is anything wrong with it.
