For Americans....a question about Obama...?
Like it or not - Obama is your president. For some, I understand thats a bitter pill. But the fact remains....he will be leading the country.
It strikes me that many are hoping for his failure - as they are so mistrustful of him and his politics. (I'm leaving race off the table and only addressing those who oppose his Democratic politics...) But do you realize that HIS failure will be YOUR failure?
I was reading another post about the inauguration, and was shocked at how many said they refused to watch... I have to say - I don't understand this mindset. I can appreciate that, perhaps, you didn't vote for him. Or that you don't like/trust him. But this is a monumental time in your country's history...aren't you interested in witnessing that?

i recall being physically ill when gw bush was elected... didn't see it coming. from my point of view he was unelectable. the sense of overwhelming disbelief coupled with a profound awareness of who many of my countrymen were was beyond my vocabulary... and beyond the scope of reason from my point of view.
so, when i hear some express that same sentiment regarding the election of obama i can sympathize no matter how strongly i disagree...
but i never wished president bush failure. you are quite right that his failures were our failures. and looking back over the last 8 years all i can see are failures brought about by ignorance, arrogance, and hubris
i likely won't watch the tele all day or follow as closely as some, but i am looking forward to hearing what our new president has to say.
really good q, btw :) it was refreshing.

I am not watching the inauguration because I flat out don't care (I wouldn't watch any inauguration). The media has hyped President Elect Obama as though he were the second coming of Christ. I just don't see it. I honestly hope he is successful and can turn this country around, but I am also sensible enough to realize that those who are truly in power (the hawkish monied elites) will never let anyone wrestle power from their hands. My greatest concern is that people listened solely to the Change hype and did not adequately delve into underlying policy (which was no different between McCain and Obama). By pulling the wool over the eyes of the American public this war mongering cabal (Democrats and Republicans) will remain in power for another four years and will attempt to steal even more of our rights.

No; the inauguration is just pomp and circumstance. The "monumental time in my country's history" will be when he starts doing things. Then we'll see what he's made of.
Also, his failure wouldn't be my failure; I'm just a citizen and if one has a proper outlook, his actions bear nothing on me. I didn't vote for him, and while I support my country, supporting him is a different matter. If he does well, I may support him but you don't have to love the President to love the country.

i don't really care to see him walk in as president. I hope he does a good job as he's now the leader of our nation. Sometimes i look at my fellow Americans and they don't see anything but the president and this scares me greatly they seem to be blind to how congress have really done nothing but sink us.
Example when oil was high we were going to drill.
It' suddenly goes down but do we continue to drill so that we can take care of ourselves and keep them low, No they haven't but we'll see.
I think gas prices will determine greatly if obama can get elected again i hope they do something weather it's oil/new tech This is the hill the man has to climb among many others good luck to him

But this is a monumental time in your country's history...aren't you interested in witnessing that?
Why's that? Because our nation was sold for 500 mill in arab money?
That's the simple fact of the matter. But you know what? As the US falls the world around us will fall. So as you sit and watch your "Monumental time' Just remember YOUR days are numbered as well.

I was thinking about it honestly even though it would probably make me sick to my stomach but then I heard Kati Couric is going to be commentating. I just can't do that...I'd be in the bathroom through most of it anyway. So no...it will have to be a historic moment that I miss out on. Anyway, my opinion is that it would have been a truly historic occasion if he had been a black man that actually earned his way to the top. He didn't...he cheated, stole and stepped on many people's toes in order to get there. I don't feel like it's such a great moment in time because to think that would be to think that our times are changing in a direction that I can't condone.

Many of these same bigots refused to hear what America was saying about Bush and the war
ergo
they were voted out
Every man woman and child in America (regardless of political stand)
should be PROUD of our country for
ONCE AGAIN
Proving that we Americans are FAIR and GOOD people
and
THAT the promise of a free and open country still exists
AND
That anyone that applies themselves CAN SUCCEED

Thank you for adding a voice of reason to the chaotic rantings I hear on YA so often. (Including most of the previous answers.)
Even those who opposed Obama should hope that he will succeed in bringing our country peace and prosperity. If he does, it will be to the benefit of us all. If he fails, we can elect someone else in four years, and hope that his successor learns from the previous mistakes.

I'm a Republican who voted for McCain, but I wish Obama the best for America's sake, but all I've seem so far on his part is complete incompetency and he hasn't even been sworn in yet. You can understand why guys like me might be discouraged....
