What does fondant taste like? ?
What I am doing is ordering custom made ants that are one inch. They are going to be on my son's birthday cake (he will be 2). I cannot decide which I should go with: icing, or fondant? They will be black. They are going to stand up. Would fondant be the best way to do these? Thank you in advance. There will also be an anthill. What do you think that should be made of? It will be completely edible. Also- these will be made in Roswell, NM and travel to Webster Groves, MO (960 miles).

Considering the travel distance, and the time difference between making the cake and serving the cake, go for the fondant. Fondant is sugary, it is also rolled out into a thin layer, so it does not overpower the cake with it's own flavor.
Have you seen some of the cakes in grocery store bakeries that have set for two days under refrigeration with a lot of decorations? Colors fade, items sink, corners fall off. That's the reason fondant is best for decorative purposes with intricate cakes.

fondant tastes like powdered sugar! If your son likes licorice flavor have the ants flavored with anise extract.
Who in Roswell is making these things?? Mr Alsup died several years ago, but he made things like this.

fondont is used to make super smooth surfaceon cake
if adding decorations to fondont you need to use some royal icing to "glue" them onto fondont.
regular icing should hold the ants up fine
fondont is hard to work with
i would use royal icing to make the ant hill as well
all things listed are edible
