If a baby tooth dies, is it necessary to get it pulled out?

Im asking this in the parenting section because Im sure there are other parents out there that have dealt with this. My daughter hit her mouth really hard in the same spot, not once but twice. It caused bleeding around the tooth that was hit and the tooth is a little bit looser than the others. We went to the dentist who was only concerned if an abcess grew, but at the time her tooth was not discoloring. Now it is starting to discolor, the gums around it look fine, just the tooth is discoloring. Is it important to get this pulled out, or will it just fall out on its own? She is 3 by the way.

They will do an x-ray at the dentist to see if it has a chance of affecting the "permanent" tooth. M daughter hit her tooth on a coffee table and killed the nerves and it made the tooth turn grey. The x-ray showed no signs of harming the new tooth so they left it in and it fell out a year later. Sometimes they do need to extract it, but not always.

There are pros and cons of both and only a dentist can answer this for you. Every case like this is different. She really needs to keep the tooth if it is not causing any problems so her teeth don't shift. If they shift before her permanent teeth come in then as her baby teeth fall out other shifted baby teeth will be in the way of her permanent teeth coming in. I hope this makes sense. The cons are that it can abscess or cause decay on the underlying tooth. I would take her back and let the dentist know what is now happening. He will give you the best advice based on your situation. I hope everything works out.

I would think so because it can cause decay and an infection in the gums. It can also cause problems with the permanent teeth. I would get it pulled. If it is loose then it needs to be pulled. Because it can fall out in their sleep and be a choking hazzard. My daughter was born cutting her 2 bottom teeth. She had them all the way in at 3 days. We had to find a dentist that would see her and he said that they had to be pulled because they were loose. They would end up falling out on their own and if it happened in her sleep they could be a choking hazzard for someone that small. But I do know of a friend who had cavities on her baby teeth and she had permanent teeth come in with cavities and decay on them. She had to have dentures at age 14. So I would find another dentist or see if that dentist will pull them. Plus Abcesses are painfull. I know I have had one a couple times.

Oh your poor little girl. It must have hurt! I would take her back to the dentist he may not have anticipated this happening. Also, maybe try posting this again dental in the health section if you need more answers. Good luck

I'd take her back to the dentist. If the tooth dies, it can abscess fairly easily. It's better to be safe than sorry.

It is always a wise decision to go to the dentist if there are any changes with the coloring or your teeth in general. I would go ahead and have him look at it again and go from there.

In time her next tooth will push it out.

Regular dental checkups will keep the dentist informed of any changes.

Yes, she needs to get it pulled before toxins leak into her system.

my niece had to have hers. by that age pulled out and they said it was important for her to do so because if she didn't it'd have problems with her other teeth growing up.
