Can I use "people lotion" on my dog's paws?
I have noticed that her paw pads are dry and cracked. She does not seem to be in any discomfort, and does not wince/whine when I check her paws. But they feel dry and I know that can lead to painful cracking. Can I just use my lotion on her paws once every few days to help keep them from overdrying?

I would not. There may be something harmful in it. After all it is not made to be consumed. There is a great product for dogs called Mushers Secret. It is better then Vaseline because it is breathable. Which is good because dogs perspire through their feet. It basically forms an invisible glove over the paw. Check it out!

It helps moisturize and prevent cracking due to cold and heat.

Vaseline, works best. You could try a natural perfume free lotion, but your dog will probably just lick it off.
Also the petstores sell a special "Paw Wax" for dry cracked pads.

Yes. The Dobermann is another one of the so called *devil* breeds, so breed prejudice is something I encounter on an almost daily basis. Typically it manifests itself owners not allowing their dogs to mix with my black b*tch, picking up small dogs presumably because they think she may decide to snack on them or changing direction to avoid crossing paths with her. It's a fact of life that the negative image of the breed as menacing & vicious attracts the idiot owner, & makes some people nervous of the breed. If someone is open minded & receptive to a balanced account of the breed, I will explain that in a nutshell GENETICS sets the core temperament of EVERY dog regardless of breed, & that was set in stone when the sperm met the egg. I ignore people who are either moronic or content to be spoon fed their opinion by the media, because they will not change their opinion whatever I say to the contrary of what they believe to be the truth about the breed. If a dog is born with a sound temperament, then trained & socialized by an owner who can cope with the innate characteristics of the breed, it will not develop into an adult dog that will randomly take chunks out of people. If on the other dog a dog is born with a shy or vicious temperament, that is the way it will remain until it draws its last breath & it cannot be changed no matter how you raise the dog. Depending on the degree of the weakness of the temperament, a competent owner would be able to keep the behaviour of the dog under control & manage its environment, so its behaviour never posed a nuisance or threat to dogs or humans.

NO! lotions can have chemicals that if licked off by the dog can injure the dog. dogs have rough dry pads on the bottom of their paws so they have better grip on the cement, dirt, etc. if it really REALLY bothers you. see a vet

I use Bag Balm. I think you can get this at the pet store. I got it at Tractor Supply. It works great for my dog's paws. Keeps them soft. I don't think people lotion will work. At the minimum use vaseline.

I wouldn't do that because the lotion has things in it that could be harmful to your dog and also your dog licks her paws and would then injest the lotion. I would not consider it safe.

I think there are specific lotions designed for canine use. Consult your vet first as dogs may lick the lotion that you will put on. This may not be healthy for him.'
Check out this link and find some tips on how to go about it. goodluck!

Don't do that, get something made specifically for dogs.
What people use has perfume and ingredients that shouldn't be ingested in it - and dogs tend to lick their paws.
Go to the feed store or pet store and get something that is safe for dogs - better yet, call your vet and ask what you can use.
The only thing I put on my dogs is antibiotic ointment, but that is for smaller areas like cuts or abrasions.

no, dogs breathe through their feet, odd i know but true. Most of the time dogs having dry pads on their feet is normal. if it looks like it could be serious or if there is any bleeding, you should consult with a vet. always consult with a vet for advice.

I wouldn't, because she will probably lick it. Something that is safe in small quantities is Hydro cortizone cream, which you can get at any drug store fairly cheap. It's the same stuff to use on Hot Spots, too. They can handle a little bit of that. If she licks excessivly, though, I'd not put too much on, because in large amounts it will make her pukey.
