How do I loose weight as a teen?
I'm 13 and 6 months old. I'm 5'4'' and 139 lbs. I actually just lost 6 pounds recently. Two weeks ago I was 145 lbs. I don't look really fat, but my weight concerns me. Plus, my doctor said I should consider more exercise (After I asked her about my weight and BMI). Since my doctor won't refer me to a dietitian... I decided to take things into my own hands. How many calories should I intake every meal? What should I eat? How long should I excercise everyday? And any other advice you might have.
I want to be either 115 pounds or 120 by August 15, 2010.

Things that Affect Your Weight
You can change your body, but how much depends on a number of things--some you can control and some you can't:
Puberty
Though you may not realize it, puberty can have a major affect on your weight and the shape of your body. Both girls and boys can expect to gain weight as well as height during puberty. Hormones released during this time often cause boys to gain muscle and girls to experience an increase in body fat. These changes are normal but may make you feel like you're overweight, even if you're not.
Genes
One question I hear a lot is, "Why don't I look like my friends?" One reason is your genes. You inherit a number of things from your parents such as where you store excess fat on your body, how tall you are, and the shape of your body (such as being pear-shaped or apple-shaped). In fact, if your parents are overweight, that increases the risk that you'll be overweight as well.
What you eat
While puberty and genetics are things you can't control, what you eat is another story. Eating french fries, fast food, sodas, chips, and sweets on a regular basis and avoiding fruits and vegetables like the plague can add excess calories without much nutrition.

Exercise
One way to control your calories is to move around more by adding both vigorous exercise and general activity throughout the day. The guidelines put out by the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) recommend at least an hour of physical activity a day and up to several hours a day for most kids and teens. Activities can include things like:
* Riding a bike
* Skateboarding or inline skating
* Swimming
* Dancing
* Walking or running
* Sports
* Shooting hoops
You'll burn more calories anytime you can get away from the TV or computer and move your body, which will help with weight loss. The key is to:
Choose things you like. If you’re not into team sports or outdoor activities, try workout videos or fitness video games, like Dance Dance Revolution.
Make it a regular habit. Try setting aside time each day for exercise so it becomes a natural part of your routine.
Look for ways to move more. Make extra laps around the mall, walk to your friend's house, or turn on the radio and dance around your bedroom. Finding ways to move more will add up to burning calories and being healthy.
Get some help. If you want to exercise but don't know where to start, talk to your parents to figure out if you can join a gym, work with a trainer, or exercise with them on a daily basis.
Watch Your Calories
Aside from being more active, watching what you eat is another important component of losing weight. You may find it useful to enlist the help of your family and friends. If your parents are in charge of buying the food, you may need to talk to them about making healthier choices or get involved with selecting groceries and making food yourself. Other ways to cut unnecessary calories include:
Watching your drinks
Too many sodas, juices and sports drinks can really add up. Replace them with water and you'll save plenty of calories.
Filling up on fruits and veggies
Most fruits and vegetables are high in fiber and nutrients while low in calories. That means you'll fill up faster and eat less. Try having fruit as snacks or before meals to cut calories without feeling hungry.
Avoiding fast food
There's nothing wrong with having an occasional burger and fries, but avoid having those types of foods every day. Make them a treat that you only have every now and then.
Avoiding mindless snacking
If you get hungry in the afternoon, keep your snacks healthy by avoiding candy, cookies, and other tempting sweets. Also, pay attention to other reasons you may eat, like being bored, tired, or feeling blue. Emotional eating only makes things worse and doesn't make your problems go away.
Eating regularly throughout the day is also important for keeping your metabolism going and your body fueled for all you want to accomplish.

If you include the right portions every meal- you are eating right. Make sure your eating more fruits & veggies more than bread and deserts.
Exercise for an hour a day. Running is the best for you. If you have a treadmill jump on it every morning or before you go to bed. If not- go for a jog when your bored. When your watching tv do some abs.
I'm 16 and i'm 5'4 and 150 pounds, i just recently lost 10 pounds in the past three months. I started running on my treadmill- and it really works! good luck.

Your only 13. Unless you are extremely lazy and have no exercise then you should be worried. What you should do is just play an extra school sport to get your metabolism running. I'm a teen and I was chubby before but as soon as you start to grow you lose it just like that.
