What's another way of saying "the dog barked?"?

I'm trying to figure out a "more interesting" way of saying the dog barked for a school assignment. That's just the first sentence. I can form the rest around that.

Thanks in advanced.... :-)

It was a dark night. There as no sound on the prairie except the distant yapping of coyotes. My border collie answered, but softly, almost reverently, calling out to some even more distant past. Not a bark, but a muffled, muted, wist-full sound, almost a prayer.

I moved closer when suddenly the cat barked. I moved close still and discovered the cat was a dog.
