Why is it that people think Glock is a police weapon?
Every time I hear someone talking about guns, who does not have a good working knowledge of guns, they talk about the "Glock" as being a Law Enforcement only weapon. Glock is a manufacturer of an inexpensive hand gun. There are no external safeties on a Glock, and sales are common place to individuals. It is not a police only weapon, but rather a simple to use everyday firearm. It seems to me that television, movies, and the media (news) have caused this mis-information to spread. That's my opinion.
What do you think?
I am not disputing a lot of departments use Glock. I know of the working mechanisms inside the Glock. I am not bad-mouthing the Glock, I own one. I am refering to the number of posts on YA where people call Glocks "Police Issue" when in reality they can be bought at any gun shop. Sorry for any confusion in the question.

Most people don't look past the obvious. Several departments I know of issue Glock's as the department issued side arm to their officers. I think its like the Ford Crown Victoria being a Law Enforcement only car.

It's an anti-gun spin. Although the only person I've known who owned a Glock is my son-in-law when he was a Police Officer in a nearby town, I've heard quite a few people talk favorably about them and recommended them to me, but by then I'd already bought my Berretta .40 calibre semi-automatic, and bought my son's Springfield .45 semi-automatic from him. He needed some extra cash as he was returning from his stint in the Army and in Iraq for a couple of years, so, what could a dad do. He knows he can buy it back from me at any time for the same price I bought it from him, so he's comfortable with the arrangement. But, back to the Glock, if I had the extra money, and really had the need, I'd go get one any day. God Bless you.

I think it is because most Police Departments use the Glock as a standard issue firearm to their officers, and it is commonly seen used by the Police. However I see your point, but most people will associate something with where they have seen it the most.

When you see TV shows like "24" or "Law & Order", most of the time you will see the actors carrying Glocks. It's just unique looking weapon. Now a lot of gun manufacturers are making weapons based off of the Glock design. So, I agree with you on this misconception.

I have never heard anybody refer to a Glock as a police weapon. It was designed for military use. Its designed to kill people.
Also, Glocks are a very safe and well designed weapon.
THERE ARE 3! safety mechanisms on a glock. They are just different then the normal switch you see on an old school pistol.
Also, Yes glocks are inexpensive. But they are very very well engineered and designed. This is a bizzare question to ask. I think you just hang out around ignorant people that are trying to act like gun experts.

You can thank the media for that. They use the term "Glock" and "handgun" almost interchangeably! I think its hilarious to watch TV shows where they guy is obviously holding a Sig, but someone calls it a Glock. Even funnier are the ones where he's holding a Glock as the start of a scene, shooting a Sig in the middle, then holstering his Glock at the end.. switching guns midstream: sure sign of left-wing media.

When Glock was originally made, from what I have been told, it was originally made to suit a police officer. It was modeled for what police officers need and to be durable, convenient (hence no external safeties, hammer etc) and smooth. A lot of departments are issued Glocks as their duty weapon.

Ay one time Glocks could only be purchased by law enforcement. This was because they came standard with high capacity magazines. When the ban on assault weapons was lifted Glocks could then be purchased by the public.

I suppose it's Hollywood again, as SIG doesn't sound as cool as Glock. Also, Glock's are the "issue" for many as we're talking budgets and the people who purchsae in bulk rather than in terms like "user friendly" or "accurate" and "won't jam under intense situations."
Custer and his forces had to use "issue" at his last stand. The native Americans had faster bows and repeating carbines.

They learn it from the same people who teach them about the semi-automatic revolvers, and the assault shotguns. In other words they learn it from watching the news on TV.
