Your experience with vet teeth cleaning?

My adopted 3 yr. old cat went for his first visit to my vet, had his shots, but now the vet says he needs his teeth cleaned. Just wondering what to expect & after care? I know the cost.

Sometimes the vet may discover that the cat has some bad teeth that need to be pulled. Cats aren't terribly cooperative when having their mouth opened and teeth check, and when they are under the anesthetic the vet can get a better look. Often the vet may prescribe an antibiotic for your cat post-dental, depending on how bad the tartar was, as it can release a lot of bacteria into the system. Your cat's mouth may be a bit tender for a few days, so you may want to feed him canned food. It will also take a bit of time for the anesthesia to work it's way out of his system, and he may be a bit groggy when he first comes home. Other than that, he'll be back to normal in a day or two.

Dental cleanings are one of the best things you can do for your cat - like humans, periodontal disease has been linked to both heart disease and kidney disease.

I've had my cats teeth cleaned before, it was usually an older cat with lots of tartar and some decayed teeth that needed to be pulled. They put them under anesthesia to do it so it's just a matter of them waking up from it and getting their bearings straight, not a big deal. Your vet will give you proper aftercare instructions.

had this done to my girl when she was about 3yr old and since then I have fed her science diet dental - for 6 years now that is all she has eaten. In that strange autistic way that cat's get she wont eat anything else except Science Diet TD so it kinda works out well

After the dentist, I fed her wet meat for dinner and for breakfast the next day and left dry in her bowl. She ate the dry so she wasn't in any pain or discomfort - it's pretty much the same as us getting our teeth cleaned at the dentist.

The anesthetic is about the only really bad thing, my girl handles it ok as they keep it light due to her heart condition
