Does a Bill have to be printed out?

For every Representative & Senator?

535 copies of a 1000 page bill = 535,000 sheets of paper

That no one read, then threw away?

I'm not by any stretch a tree hugger, but what the heck is that all about?

Is it a law that everyone get a paper copy?

I could see triplicate maybe but over half a million thrown away sheets of paper seems wasteful to me.

Now, if they only had a law that would require enough time to actually read a bill before it is passed. Maybe one day for each page? Bills certainly wouldn't be quite so wordy, now, would they....

There's no law that obligates them to provide a paper copy to every member of Congress.

What happens in fact is that most members read committee reports that summarize the legislation instead of reading the legislation itself.

But in the end, most members end up with a complete copy somewhere in their offices. That's just how legislation works. Lots of bills means lots of paper.
