Why is my reception hall different from others?
I have read on here and heard from others who have had weddings that having a buffet dinner is cheaper for a wedding. However, the hall where I booked my reception informed me and my finace that it would cost us MORE to have a buffet because they have to make more food as opposed to a sit down where they only have to make 2 or 3 of the same dish.
Is anyone elses hall like this or is mine the exception? I was wondering because I was thinking of having a buffet so my guests have more variety but I don't want to put out the extra money.

you have answered your own question. a buffet costs more because it is a lot more work (and no not serving work) than you realise. there is much more choice and you also have to make extra food to keep the stations looking full.

I've always heard that buffets cost more. The way around that is to have only one main dish for the buffet, so that they end up making the same amount of food as they would otherwise.

I always had the same question when i saw people on here talking about buffets being cheaper than sit down because in nyc where i live every catering hall i went it was the same price. I don't like buffets and won't be having one in my wedding. I understand the whole more options idea but i don't like them especially if you are having a formal wedding.

I think there is a clear misconception about buffets. Some stick their noses up at them, but they are a great choice if you want to offer variety to your guests. And yes, they usually cost MORE because you do need more food to keep them looking good.
Good luck! I'm opting for a buffet at my June wedding.

A buffet is great if your hall will accomodate your costs. I think it is a good idea if you are catering your own reception. Since you have already booked it, just go with the non-buffet so you do not have to pay more.

In my venue, a plated meal or a buffet cost the exact same amount of money (odd, uh?)
We had a clam bake, so the venue recommended a buffet instead, so the lobsters could be kept steaming hot.
Good luck

I don't know, but I've read that a few times on this site, too.
However, the vast majority of the time a buffet is cheaper. It's not so much because of the food, it's because they need so many fewer servers - so it's wage-related.

I always assumed a buffet was cheaper because you didn't have to have servers bringing plates to each table. but each venue has their own prices I guess. if it's cheaper to have a served dinner, go with that because it's more formal anyway and people like it better.

That's what they said, but have you seen a menu? They may just say that hoping you will take their word for it and actually spend more money. I'd ask to actually see a broken down price list of ALL your options.
If it actually is true then that is very odd.
